Dear Reader:
Some of my most interesting moments at Bookreporter.com have come from conversations
with authors. About four months ago David
Schmahmann, a debut author contacted me and told me about his book, EMPIRE SETTINGS. I
read an advanced reading copy and was just mesmerized by the story. This prompted the
interview and review done by Sarah Brennan, Bookreporter.com's Editorial Manager this
week. I'm proud to share a book like EMPIRE SETTINGS
with our readers since a title like this might get missed since it is from a small
publisher.
Our second interview this week came about in a very different way. Dini von Mueffling, the
author of THE ART AND POWER OF BEING A LADY, a
book we featured last week mentioned she was having drinks with Christopher Whitcomb, the author of COLD ZERO. I asked her if she would like to interview
him for us as I knew she was just wild about this book. And another great interview was
born.
Most weeks putting together Bookreporter.com is fun, but this week was particularly
exciting given these two author interviews.
Something else I love is hearing from readers. This week I was particularly touched by the
young readers of Kidsreads.com. As you may recall we ran a chapter on Understanding Terrorism two weeks ago. Our
mailbox has been full of comments from the children reading Kidsreads.com weighing in with
their thoughts on terrorism and the events of the past month. If you would like to
read what they had to say, click here. Please note
that we did not edit them, thus the typos and punctuation errors that you see. We wanted
it to be in their own words.

One You Don't Want to Miss:
Beginning Saturday, October 13th, HBO will be airing SHOT IN THE HEART, an original movie based on the
book of the same name. Author Mikal Gilmore tells, in heartwrenchingly personal prose, the
story of a murderer and the cycles of violence that produced him. Gilmore's story has such
authenticity and pathos because the author himself was the youngest brother of Gary
Gilmore, the murderer he writes about.
