Dear Reader:
Welcome to the official start of summer! Whether you will be heading for the lake, the
beach, or the backyard to spend a nice relaxing holiday with family or friends we know
you'll be packing at least one book. Stuck for something to read? No problem.
The staff of Bookreporter.com has compiled a huge list of possibilities in our summer
reading feature --- Beach Books
& Beyond! Grouped by categories for easy browsing, there's everything from
adventure to history to thrillers. While we have made our selections, we know you will
have your own favorites to suggest as the summer goes on. Each category page has an email
link so you can write the Bookreporter.com staffer who compiled the list to suggest
additions. We'll add your ideas in early July.
But the great recommendations do not stop there. On AuthorsOnTheWeb.com we asked five
authors what they will be reading this summer. Their selections are posted on our Authors' Summer Reading
Lists page. And we'll be adding lists from more authors as the summer goes along so
keep checking back.
Are you in a reading group? if so, we have ideas for you in our Summer Reading Groups feature
at ReadingGroupGuides.com. If you've ever wanted to start a reading group, but been unsure
of how to do it, we've got ideas for unique summer reading groups --- ones that meet
places like the water's edge --- and a selection of great reads for first-timers.
And yes, as promised, today we launch the Surf the Web for Summer Reading
Contest. You could win big just for doing a little book site browsing; something we
all do anyway, right? All you have to do is find the contest word on each of the nine
participating book websites, put the words in order to make a grammatically correct
sentence, and send it to Contests@bookreporter.com. We're giving away a total of $1,000 in
prizes including a $300 Amazon gift certicate, so this contest definitely is worth
checking out!
Of course, this weekend is more than just the start of the summer season --- it's also
Memorial Day weekend, when Americans pay tribute to all those men and women in uniform who
have served our country. Bookreporter.com invited four writers with distinct voices to
share their perspectives on this somber holiday. Aaron Elson, an author/historian who has
interviewed hundreds of veterans for his oral histories, reminisces on A UNIQUE VOICE
FROM WORLD WAR II. Susanne H. Seppo, wife of a WWII veteran, shares her thoughts on
the meaning of MEMORIAL
DAY, and veteran Martin J. Brennan reminds us that whatever the climate of the times,
all veterans deserve to be remembered in A RETURN TO HONOR.
Bookreporter's own Ann Bruns recalls her own FAMILY
REMEMBRANCE that left a lasting impression. These poignant memories are a part of our
Memorial Day tribute that includes an interview with Stephen E. Ambrose, book reviews and
movie spotlights. We hope it will provide you some information and food for thought as we
honor our veterans this Memorial Day weekend.
