April 27, 2001

Dear Reader:

Did you know that this week is National TV Turnoff week? If you haven't managed to make it through the week without turning on the tube, this weekend gives you a chance to redeem yourself --- and we can make it easy with lots of book recommendations and great online reading!

One of our new reviews is IN THE COMPANY OF ANGELS by N.M. Kelby, a debut novel about a young Jewish girl who is rescued by nuns after the Nazis raid her home in Belgium during World War II. The nuns take the girl to their convent. Soon, a series of miracles begins, and the line between reality and fantasy starts to blur. I saw Kelby read from the novel when I was in Virginia and was mesmerized both by the story and her reading of it. The book, which is moving in its portrayal of European village life during the war, is an especially good choice for reading groups, as it's sure to spark discussion about the miracles in the story. For more about the book and its author, check out 8 Debut Authors on Getting Published, in which Kelby describes the how the novel --- and her career as a writer --- developed.

This week we also bring you an interview with Queen of Suspense Mary Higgins Clark, whose latest thriller, ON THE STREET WHERE YOU LIVE, is set in Spring Lake, New Jersey, a beach town that I know well. I love to read books that take place in parts of the country I have visited, so I'm looking forward to picking up this one. What book or books do you think do a great job of conveying the local flavor of a particular town or region? That's the Question of the Week. To reply, click here. By the way, we are planning to use your replies in an upcoming feature!

As this is Cancer Control Awareness Month, we "Re-View" our feature on surviving cancer, which includes a collection of book reviews and interviews with Betty Rollin, Laney Katz Becker, Joni Rodgers, and Elizabeth Berg.

If you're in the mood to shop, you'll enjoy visiting the new Bookreporter.com marketplace. There you'll find what we think is the best online shopping for readers--books, magazines, gifts, downloadable audio, and more. I'd love to know what you think of the marketplace, as well as what kinds of goods you like to shop for online. Please feel free to send your thoughts me way at Carol@Bookreporter.com.
