When we left off last week, I was racing with our staff to our Book Group Speed Dating event featuring 27 publishers presenting upcoming book group titles to more than 200 attendees at BookExpo America (BEA). It was a smashing success; what an enthusiastic audience we had!

Laura Dave, author of Eight Hundred Grapes

Growing up on her family’s Sonoma vineyard, Georgia Ford learned some important secrets. The secret number of grapes it takes to make a bottle of wine: 800. The secret ingredient in her mother’s lasagna: chocolate. The secret behind ending a fight: hold hands. But just a week before her wedding, 30-year-old Georgia discovers her beloved fiancé has been keeping a secret so explosive, it will change their lives forever.

Judy Blume, author of In the Unlikely Event

In 1987, Miri Ammerman returns to her hometown of Elizabeth, New Jersey, to attend a commemoration of the worst year of her life. Thirty-five years earlier, when Miri was 15, and in love for the first time, a succession of airplanes fell from the sky, leaving a community reeling. Against this backdrop of actual events that Judy Blume experienced in the early 1950s, when airline travel was new and exciting and everyone dreamed of going somewhere, she paints a vivid portrait of a particular time and place. Through it all, one generation reminds another that life goes on.

Stephen King, author of Finders Keepers

John Rothstein is an iconic author who created a famous character, Jimmy Gold, but hasn’t published a book for decades. Morris Bellamy kills Rothstein and empties his safe of cash, but the real treasure is a trove of notebooks containing at least one more Gold novel. Morris hides the money and the notebooks, and then is locked away for another crime. Decades later, Pete Saubers finds the treasure, and now Bill Hodges, Holly Gibney and Jerome Robinson must rescue Pete and his family from Morris when he’s released from prison after 35 years.

Needing something to read on a flight out of Phoenix, I picked up PRIME WITNESS by Steve Martini in the Sky Harbor News kiosk back in 1993. There I met his protagonist, lawyer Paul Madriani; by the time I landed in San Diego, I was hooked. I trolled the San Diego kiosk before my return flight and was delighted to find his earlier thriller, COMPELLING EVIDENCE, so I buried my nose in the pages for the flight home. Read More

About the Book

Defending an innocent young man, defense attorney Paul Madriani uncovers a morass of corruption and greed that leads to the highest levels of political power in this electrifying tale of suspense from New York Times bestselling author Steve Martini.

One of the most successful lawyers in the country, Olinda Serna is a master at managing money as well as her influential clients. After years of fierce combat in the political trenches, Serna knows all the dirty secrets, where the bodies are buried, and how deeply they are stacked. When she’s killed in a roadside crash in the high desert of Southern California, powerful heads in Washington begin to panic, worried that their secrets may not be safe anymore.

Alex Ives, a friend of Paul Madriani’s daughter, is accused of vehicular manslaughter in Serna’s death. Ives claims he had only one drink on the night of the accident, yet he can’t remember anything between the time he left for a party north of San Diego and the moment he woke up in a hospital the next morning. He’s still dazed and a little bruised, but also obviously very afraid. After all, a woman is dead, and he’s sure he didn’t kill her.

To save an innocent young man’s life, the brilliant defense attorney must uncover everything he can about Serna and her clients --- no matter how unsavory --- a search that will lead him into a vortex of corruption, and at its center, a devious killer poised to strike again.

With Brooklyn the bastion of all things cool and hip, and Manhattan the center of culture and commerce, the borough of the Bronx is often overlooked or misunderstood. It certainly is rarely the focus of artistic or literary expression. But with Jerome Charyn's latest book, BITTER BRONX, the Bronx is in the spotlight, albeit a dark and gritty one. Read More

BITTER BRONX, Jerome Charyn's new collection, is suffused with the texture and nostalgia of a lost time and place, combining a keen eye for detail with the author's lived experience. These stories are informed by a childhood growing up near that middle-class mecca, the Grand Concourse; falling in love with three voluptuous librarians at a public library in the Lower Depths of the South Bronx; and eating at Mafia-owned restaurants along Arthur Avenue's restaurant row.

About the Book

Brooklyn is dead. Long live the Bronx! In BITTER BRONX, Jerome Charyn returns to his roots and leads the literary renaissance of an oft-overlooked borough in this surprising new collection.

In BITTER BRONX, one of our most gifted and original novelists depicts a world before and after modern urban renewal destroyed the gritty sanctity of a land made famous by Ruth, Gehrig and Joltin' Joe.

BITTER BRONX, is suffused with the texture and nostalgia of a lost time and place, combining a keen eye for detail with Jerome Charyn's lived experience. These stories are informed by a childhood growing up near that middle-class mecca, the Grand Concourse; falling in love with three voluptuous librarians at a public library in the Lower Depths of the South Bronx; and eating at Mafia-owned restaurants along Arthur Avenue's restaurant row, amid a "land of deprivation…where fathers trundled home…with a monumental sadness on their shoulders."

In "Lorelei," a lonely hearts grifter returns home and finds his childhood sweetheart still living in the same apartment house on the Concourse; in "Archy and Mehitabel" a high school romance blossoms around a newspaper comic strip; in "Major Leaguer" a former New York Yankee confronts both a gang of drug dealers and the wreckage that Robert Moses wrought in his old neighborhood; and in three interconnected stories --- "Silk & Silk," "Little Sister" and "Marla" --- Marla Silk, a successful Manhattan attorney, discovers her father's past in the Bronx and a mysterious younger sister who was hidden from her, kept in a fancy rest home near the Botanical Garden. In these stories and others, the past and present tumble together in Charyn's singular and distinctly "New York prose, street-smart, sly, and full of lurches" (John Leonard, New York Times).

Throughout it all looms the "master builder" Robert Moses, a man who believed he could "save" the Bronx by building a highway through it, dynamiting whole neighborhoods in the process. BITTER BRONX stands as both a fictional eulogy for the people and places paved over by Moses' expressway and an affirmation of Charyn's "brilliant imagination" (Elizabeth Taylor, Chicago Tribune)

Two things immediately become obvious after reading the first few pages of GHOSTHEART. The first is that it is beautifully, even exquisitely, written. Those who have experienced the depth of the quality of R.J. Ellory’s literary work will not find this surprising. The second is that Ellory proceeds at his own pace when he proceeds at all. Annie O’Neill has it all: a cozy Manhattan apartment, a beautiful bookshop and a network of supportive friends. But her father died in her childhood, leaving a hole she has yet to fill. When a mysterious man named Forrester enters the shop and claims to be her father’s oldest friend, she jumps at the chance to discover more. Forrester, though, seems much more interested in telling her a story about a ruthless ganglord and a decades-old betrayal --- a betrayal that has something very much to do with her.
