Texas Turnaround

I am writing this newsletter before I fly to Dallas for a very quick trip to give a speech at a Mystery Writers of America's Southwest Chapter event. I am looking forward to the flight as I have a few books and manuscripts that I am anxious to read, as well as a lineup queued on my iPod and this deep purple wrap I want to get some knitting done on. I have been running so much recently that I am looking forward to a few hours of uninterrupted time on the plane. When I get really busy I fantasize about flying to Australia and back, just for a chunk of time to call my own with no emails that I feel an urgent need to respond to, ringing phones, meetings or questions. Never mind the frequent flyer miles...I would treasure the time alone!

People who know me know how much I love to laugh and how I love clever people with great wit. Years ago when I was at Mademoiselle we had a summer intern whose name was Mindy Schneider, who always made me laugh. She had self-deprecating humor and a way of looking at life that would make us all take pause and smile. (We truly wonder why Mindy never wrote her own version of THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA.) The magazine had endless moments ripe for humor, and Mindy seized every one and played it to us with great timing. She went on to L.A. where she found her dream job of writing for sitcoms, though she never did get to write for "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," which is what she always fantasized about. We've kept in touch over the years via email (hers always gets me smiling), and we get together whenever I find myself on the Left Coast.

Well, now you all can see why I love Mindy's writing as her book, NOT A HAPPY CAMPER, was published this week. We have an interview with her and a review of this book where Mindy looks back at her years as a 13-year-old camper at Camp Kin-A-Hurra in Maine. If you went to camp, thought about going to camp, ever were 13 or just love witty writing, this is a book to read --- and give. For the record, I never went to camp and my sons never went to camp, but we all love, love, loved this book. I think you will too. Oh, to see Mindy and some of the amazing camp paraphernalia she has managed to hold on to (her home is a homage to brilliantly collected kitsch), go to her website: Not-A-Happy-Camper.com.

And speaking of L.A. writers, we also have an interview with Nick Santora, the author of SLIP & FALL, which was published this week. Joe Hartlaub gives it a rave. Reminder that Nick's book is on-sale exclusively at Borders and Waldenbooks and online here at Borders.com.

This week we bring you two new One to Watch authors. The first is Anita Amirrezvani, the author of THE BLOOD OF FLOWERS. As you may recall I really love this book, which is the story of a young Iranian rug weaver in the 17th century. It's a number one Booksense pick, which are the choices of independent booksellers across the country. We have 10 copies to share with readers who would like to read and comment. Write us at [email protected] (note the address) with your name and mailing address by Friday, June 22nd to enter.

Our second One to Watch selection is WOMAN IN RED by Eileen Goudge. This is one of the books I am looking forward to finishing on the plane as I have been enjoying it these past few days. The protagonist, Alice, spent nine years in jail for the attempted murder of the drunk driver who killed her younger son. Now she is out, rebuilding her life as she uncovers the secrets of her past, which includes a painting of her grandmother called Woman in Red. As she reconnects with her older son, who now is a sullen teenager, he is charged with a crime, and they come together as she stands by him. We have 10 copies to share with readers who would like to read and comment. Write us at [email protected] (note the address) with your name and mailing address by Friday, June 22nd to enter.

Also on this week's lineup --- Our Summer Beach Bag of Books title is ONCE UPON A DAY by Lisa Tucker. I have been a fan of Lisa's writing since her debut, THE SONG READER, a few years ago. Here she writes a tale of two lost souls who come together on a day in St. Louis. Contest details are here, and you have until Thursday, June 21st to enter.

We have updated ReadingGroupGuides.com with a number of new guides this month, as well as a complete redesign of the site that has been two years in the making. Huge thanks to Sunil Kumar, Vicky Kariolic and Eric Rhodes on our production team, and our Design Director, Joe Rivera, for making this happen. Be sure to check it out!

As a tribute to David Chase and what I am seeing as a brilliant end to "The Sopranos" (though that was NOT my first reaction), I was tempted to end the opener of this newsletter in mid-sentence. But as I feared the onslaught of reader mail and since, unlike Chase, I do not have a chateau in France to retreat to and let you talk amongst yourselves, I figure I better write an ending. (Have you ever seen a final episode generate that much chatter?)

So....Happy Father's Day to all the dads and grandads out there. For those of you with last-minute shopping habits, you have
suggestions from us here. Dads, grab hammock time for reading if you are not hitting the links, the fishing hole or other manly pursuits.

We're also announcing our Father's Day Duffel Bag of Books Contest winners this week. Thanks to all of you who took the time to enter. We are sharing some of your entries along with the winners, so be sure to take a look at this feature. It's been fun seeing what books your dads read to you when you were a child.

Have a great week. For us school ends Tuesday, and I cannot wait! I think I am more excited than the boys about this.

May I resist the urge to buy a cowboy hat in Texas. I do remember bringing home cattle horns from a trip to Houston years ago. I think today I would be stopped at the airport and they would be classified as a lethal weapon, or at least a weapon of potential in-flight destruction.

Carol Fitzgerald ([email protected])

PS: While it's just an overnight trip, readers may want to note that I managed to pack ONE carry-on bag, in turquoise of course. A milestone.

Now in Stores: THE SONNET LOVER by Carol Goodman

THE SONNET LOVER by Carol Goodman (Fiction)
Did Shakespeare have a lover? Did they meet? Did she write sonnets to him? These questions are at the heart of Carol Goodman’s newest novel, in which the author combines murder and myth and love unrequited, played out with a cast of finely limned characters, each with an agenda of his or her own. Author Talk: Nick Santora, Author of SLIP & FALL

Nick Santora, screenwriter and executive producer of the TV show "Prison Break," recently published his debut novel, SLIP & FALL. In this interview conducted by Kathleen Flaherty (an LA publicist and owner of K21 Communications based in Beverly Hills), Santora explains some of the autobiographical elements of this thriller, as well as the inspiration behind his favorite moments, and humorously imagines what his life would be like without writing. He also discusses how he began penning scripts for the small screen following a career in law and describes receiving his "big break" from David Chase, creator of "The Sopranos."

SLIP & FALL by Nick Santora (Thriller)
Nick Santora’s debut novel is a thriller with quick pacing and vivid imagery that will catapult readers into a page-turning adventure. Themes of familial bonds and the struggle between the lure of success and the boundaries of ethics are cast in a way that will conjure up comparisons to John Grisham’s THE FIRM, while fans of “Prison Break” will appreciate the heart and soul that underlies the gut-wrenching plot. Author Talk: Mindy Schneider, Author of NOT A HAPPY CAMPER

Mindy Schneider's first book, NOT A HAPPY CAMPER, is a humorous account of one unforgettable summer she spent at a sleepaway camp in the backwoods of Maine. In this interview, Schneider describes what inspired her to capture her momentous and unconventional experiences in a memoir and reminisces about some of her best and worst memories of the 1970s. She also explains how her past career as a sitcom writer helped to shape her book and discusses the various projects and hobbies she has taken on working for the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks.

NOT A HAPPY CAMPER: A Memoir by Mindy Schneider (Memoir)
NOT A HAPPY CAMPER chronicles 13-year-old Mindy’s adventures at a rainy, rundown, wildly unsupervised camp in Maine called Kin-A-Hurra. For eight eye-opening and unforgettable weeks, she and her eccentric band of friends keep busy feuding in color wars, failing at sports and uncovering the camp’s hidden past. Alice Kessler spent nine years in prison for the attempted murder of the drunk driver who killed her son. Now she’s returned home to Gray’s Island to reconnect with the son she left behind. Her boy, Jeremy, now a sullen teenager, is wrongly accused of rape, and mother and son are thrown together in a desperate attempt to prove his innocence. She’s aided by Colin McGinty, a recovering alcoholic and 9/11 widower, also recently returned to the island in the aftermath of his grandfather’s death. Colin’s grandfather, a famous artist, is best known for his haunting portrait, “Woman in Red,” which happens to be of Alice’s grandmother.

In a tale that weaves the past with the present, we come to know the story behind the portrait, of the forbidden wartime romance between William McGinty and Eleanor Styles, and the deadly secret that bound them more tightly than even their love for each other. A secret that, more than half a century later, is about to be unburied, as Alice and Colin are drawn into a fragile romance of their own and the ghost of an enemy from long ago surfaces in the form of his grandson, the very man responsible for sending Alice to prison.

The start of summer is the perfect time to discover Holly Peterson, whose book THE MANNY releases on June 19th. If she’s like the gutsy heroine of Holly Peterson’s astute new comedy of manners among the ill-mannered elite, she does what every other woman on the block does. She hires herself a “manny.”

A solid middle-class girl from Middle America, Jamie Whitfield isn’t “one of them” but she lives in “the Grid,” the wealthiest acre of real estate in Manhattan, where big money and big media collide. And she has most everything they have --- a big new apartment, full-time help with her three children, as well as her very own detached Master of the Universe attorney husband. What she doesn’t have, however, is a full-time father figure for their struggling nine-year-old son, Dylan. But the rich haven’t yet encountered a problem they can’t hire someone else to solve.

Enter the manny.

Featured One to Watch Author: Katie Roiphe, Author of UNCOMMON ARRANGEMENTS

Katie Roiphe's previous books include THE MORNING AFTER, LAST NIGHT IN PARADISE and a novel, STILL SHE HAUNTS ME. In her latest, UNCOMMON ARRANGEMENTS --- which goes on sale June 26th --- she explores seven unconventional Edwardian marriages and the crises that occured in each of them.

More about UNCOMMON ARRANGEMENTS:
Katie Roiphe’s stimulating work has made her one of the most talked about cultural critics of her generation. Now this bracing young writer delves deeply into one of the most layered of subjects: marriage. Drawn in part from the private memoirs, personal correspondence, and long-forgotten journals of the British literary community from 1910 to the Second World War, here are seven "marriages a la mode" --- each rising to the challenge of intimate relations in more or less creative ways.

Every chapter revolves around a crisis that occurred in each of these marriages --- as serious as life-threatening illness or as seemingly innocuous as a slightly tipsy dinner table conversation --- and how it was resolved…or not resolved. In these portraits, Roiphe brilliantly evokes what are, as she says, "the fluctuations and shifts in attraction, the mysteries of lasting affection, the endurance and changes in love, and the role of friendship in marriage." The deeper mysteries at stake in all relationships.

Featured One to Watch Author: Brett Battles, Author of THE CLEANER

More about THE CLEANER:
Meet Jonathan Quinn: a freelance operative with a take-no-prisoners style and the heart of a loner. His job? Professional "cleaner." Nothing too violent, just disposing of bodies, doing a little cleanup if necessary. But in Brett Battles’s electrifying debut novel, Quinn’s latest assignment will change everything, igniting a harrowing journey of violence, betrayal, and revenge.

The job seemed simple enough: investigating a suspicious case of arson. But when a dead body turns up where it doesn’t belong --- and Quinn’s handlers at "the Office" turn strangely silent --- he knows he’s in over his head. With only a handful of clues, Quinn scrambles for cover, struggling to find out why someone wants him dead...and if it’s linked to a larger attempt to wipe out the Office.

Quinn’s only hope may be Orlando, a woman from his past who’s reluctant to help but who may hold the key to solving the case. Suddenly the two are prying into old crimes, crisscrossing continents, struggling to stay alive long enough to unbury the truth. But as the hunt intensifies, Quinn is stunned by what he uncovers: a chilling secret...and a brilliantly orchestrated conspiracy --- with an almost unimaginable goal.
