Summer Beach Bag of Books Promotion

Let the Convention Begin....

Today kicks off the Book Expo America (BEA) trade show in New York, which is a whirlwind event where publishers present their fall titles and we all are on what seems like an endless merry-go-round of meeting authors, hearing about new books and celebrating at parties and other soirees. The schedule reminds me of finals week at college. By Sunday there will not be enough caffeine around to keep even "Energizer Bunny" me going, but we will have a pretty good picture of what's going to be published for fall.

I already have read two late summer/fall books that are noteworthy. The first is LOVING FRANK by Nancy Horan (August 7th), a beautifully written novel about the life and love that Martha "Mamah" Borthwick had with Frank Lloyd Wright. After visiting both of Wright's Taliesin residences last year, this story had even more meaning for me. Last weekend my hammock reading included NO TIME FOR GOODBYE by Linwood Barclay (September 25th). Many of you may know his Zack Walker series from features on Bookreporter.com. This new book is a stand-alone with an interesting plot. A 14-year-old girl wakes up one morning to find that her entire family is gone. Flash forward 25 years later and she is about to learn the truth about what happened to them. It has a great cast of characters and is very well executed.

Back in the present, we have three new One to Watch authors for you to note.  It's been a very exciting time here as we are presenting to you more authors than ever who you want to keep an eye on --- and many we know are not names you are seeing everywhere. This week we are featuring Adriana Bourgoin, author of NINE MONTHS IN AUGUST; Katie Roiphe, author of UNCOMMON ARRANGEMENTS; and Brett Battles, author of THE CLEANER.

These are three very different books --- one is a story of a woman who plans to wait for the perfect moment to have a child while her body has other ideas and throws her a curve ball, the second is an exploration of seven unconventional Edwardian marriages and the crises that occured in each of them, and the last is the beginning of a series featuring Jonathan Quinn, a freelance operative and a professional "cleaner" whose job it is to dispose of bodies and tie up loose ends. We have 10 copies of each book to share with readers who send their names and mailing addresses to us by Friday, June 8th. Please see each individual offer below, carefully noting the address to respond to for each as they are different.

This week we are sharing advance reader comments about A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS by Khaled Hosseini and REQUIEM FOR AN ASSASSIN by Barry Eisler. I sat reading the comments for both books on my Blackberry yesterday while I was waiting for a friend to meet me for lunch, and I was beaming as I read how much both of these books had moved our readers. When I see feedback like this, I feel like a host who has prepared a terrific meal and everyone has left happy at the end of the evening. Nice feeling.

Our Summer Beach Bag of Books title is LOST & FOUND by Jacqueline Sheehan. It's the story of a young widow who takes up a new life in Maine and finds her way back to life with the help of a black lab named Lloyd. If you liked Lolly Winston's GOOD GRIEF, you will enjoy this one. Our beach bag includes an adorable black lab Beanie Baby named Luke. A few years ago, when my younger son was not feeling well, I bought him a Luke. It quickly became his favorite talisman, and Luke has logged a few miles with us. It was funny when we saw the five new ones arrive in the mail (I tracked some down online since they are now out of production). They looked A LOT less shopworn than his Luke; there is something about looking at them that just makes me smile. I hope they do the same for our winners. Contest details are here, and you have until Thursday, June 7th to enter the contest.

We have a new Books Into Movies column this month. Last night The Starter Wife, based on Gigi Levangie Grazer's New York Times bestseller of the same name, premiered on the USA Network. I loved this book, which was part of our Beach Bag feature two summers ago. I look forward to catching it as this two-hour premiere will be airing a few times over this weekend. Get the DVR going.

This weekend is always a time for me to do some looking back. Eleven years ago I attended my first BEA conference. I knew no one. Lots has changed since then. I've become a different reader with a much broader palate. My life has been endlessly enriched by the books and authors who I have come to know, as well as the readers who have shared their stories with me. I got a note last weekend from a reader who told me that we have given her so many reading selections that she has created an Excel spreadsheet for her future reading list. Made my day hearing that.

Thus no time to swing in the hammock this weekend or stop to smell the fabulous peonies in my garden. It's time to look for great books to keep you all reading...and I cannot wait to see what's out there to be shared. Have a great weekend and week...please clock some hammock time for me.

New Featured One to Watch Author: Adriana Bourgoin, Author of NINE MONTHS IN AUGUST

One of our three new One to Watch authors is Adriana Bourgoin, whose superbly insightful debut, NINE MONTHS IN AUGUST --- which is now available in stores --- captures the crushing fears, exhilarating joys and ceaseless surprises of one woman’s passage to motherhood.

We have 10 copies of NINE MONTHS IN AUGUST by Adriana Bourgoin to give away to readers who would like to preview the book and comment about it. A description can be found by clicking the link below. If you are interested, please send your name and mailing address to [email protected] by Friday, June 8th.

More about NINE MONTHS IN AUGUST:
Gretchen Fox is a planner and list-maker by nature, perfectly suited to her job as a hotel catering manager. And in her cautious, look-before-you-leap way, Gretchen was waiting until the time was absolutely perfect before she had a baby.

Her body, however, had other ideas. Now Gretchen is discovering what a big difference a little blue line can make --- to her marriage, her career, and her state of mind. As Gretchen spends sleepless nights pondering all the reasons she’s not ready to become a mother, she starts to question every other area of her life too. Even her relationship with Meredith and Louisa, her closest friends since their days together at Smith College, undergoes a sudden, dramatic shift.

As she’s inducted into a new world of anti-motion sickness wristbands, emergency supplies of ginger ale, and hormone fueled crying jags, Gretchen realizes that all the planning in the world couldn’t have prepared her for the wonderful, extraordinary journey that lies ahead…

New Featured One to Watch Author: Katie Roiphe, Author of UNCOMMON ARRANGEMENTS

Our second new One to Watch author is Katie Roiphe, whose previous books include THE MORNING AFTER, LAST NIGHT IN PARADISE and a novel, STILL SHE HAUNTS ME. In her latest, UNCOMMON ARRANGEMENTS --- which goes on sale June 26th --- she explores seven unconventional Edwardian marriages and the crises that occured in each of them.

We have 10 advance reading copies of UNCOMMON ARRANGEMENTS by Katie Roiphe to give away to readers who would like to preview the book and comment about it. A description can be found by clicking the link below. If you are interested, please send your name and mailing address to [email protected] by Friday, June 8th.

More about UNCOMMON ARRANGEMENTS:
Katie Roiphe’s stimulating work has made her one of the most talked about cultural critics of her generation. Now this bracing young writer delves deeply into one of the most layered of subjects: marriage. Drawn in part from the private memoirs, personal correspondence, and long-forgotten journals of the British literary community from 1910 to the Second World War, here are seven "marriages a la mode" --- each rising to the challenge of intimate relations in more or less creative ways.

Every chapter revolves around a crisis that occurred in each of these marriages --- as serious as life-threatening illness or as seemingly innocuous as a slightly tipsy dinner table conversation --- and how it was resolved…or not resolved. In these portraits, Roiphe brilliantly evokes what are, as she says, "the fluctuations and shifts in attraction, the mysteries of lasting affection, the endurance and changes in love, and the role of friendship in marriage." The deeper mysteries at stake in all relationships.

New Featured One to Watch Author: Brett Battles, Author of THE CLEANER

Our third new One to Watch author is Brett Battles. His debut novel, THE CLEANER, is a furiously paced thriller that marks the beginning of a series featuring Jonathan Quinn, a freelance operative and a professional "cleaner" whose job it is to dispose of bodies and tie up loose ends. The book will be in stores on June 26th.

We have 10 advance reading copies of THE CLEANER by Brett Battles to give away to readers who would like to preview the book and comment about it. A description can be found by clicking the link below. If you are interested, please send your name and mailing address to [email protected] by Friday, June 8th.

More about THE CLEANER:
Meet Jonathan Quinn: a freelance operative with a take-no-prisoners style and the heart of a loner. His job? Professional "cleaner." Nothing too violent, just disposing of bodies, doing a little cleanup if necessary. But in Brett Battles’s electrifying debut novel, Quinn’s latest assignment will change everything, igniting a harrowing journey of violence, betrayal, and revenge.

The job seemed simple enough: investigating a suspicious case of arson. But when a dead body turns up where it doesn’t belong --- and Quinn’s handlers at "the Office" turn strangely silent --- he knows he’s in over his head. With only a handful of clues, Quinn scrambles for cover, struggling to find out why someone wants him dead...and if it’s linked to a larger attempt to wipe out the Office.

Quinn’s only hope may be Orlando, a woman from his past who’s reluctant to help but who may hold the key to solving the case. Suddenly the two are prying into old crimes, crisscrossing continents, struggling to stay alive long enough to unbury the truth. But as the hunt intensifies, Quinn is stunned by what he uncovers: a chilling secret...and a brilliantly orchestrated conspiracy --- with an almost unimaginable goal.

Featured One to Watch Author: Holly Peterson, Author of THE MANNY

The start of summer is the perfect time to discover Holly Peterson, whose book THE MANNY releases on June 19th. More about THE MANNY:

What’s a Park Avenue working mom to do when her troubled son desperately needs a male role model and her husband is a power workaholic? If she’s like the gutsy heroine of Holly Peterson’s astute new comedy of manners among the ill-mannered elite, she does what every other woman on the block does. She hires herself a “manny.”

A solid middle-class girl from Middle America, Jamie Whitfield isn’t “one of them” but she lives in “the Grid,” the wealthiest acre of real estate in Manhattan, where big money and big media collide. And she has most everything they have --- a big new apartment, full-time help with her three children, as well as her very own detached Master of the Universe attorney husband. What she doesn’t have, however, is a full-time father figure for their struggling nine-year-old son, Dylan. But the rich haven’t yet encountered a problem they can’t hire someone else to solve.

Enter the manny.

Our final One to Watch author is Carol Goodman. More about THE SONNET LOVER:
Did Shakespeare pen a series of passionate sonnets, unknown to modern scholarship, ardently praising a mysterious dark-haired beauty? This tantalizing question is raised in a letter to literature professor Rose Asher. But the letter’s author, Rose’s star pupil, is not telling. A troubled, enigmatic young man, he plunged to his death in front of the college’s entire faculty, an apparent suicide. Determined to find the truth, Rose journeys from New York to Italy, back to the magnificent Tuscan villa where as an undergraduate she first fell in love.

Lush, lyrical, and enthralling, THE SONNET LOVER vividly brings to life the Tuscan countryside and the fascinating world of the Renaissance poets. Unmatched in her ability to evoke atmosphere and intrigue, Carol Goodman delivers her most ambitious and satisfying work to date, a seductive novel that skillfully propels its reader headlong to the final suspenseful page.

June's Books Into Movies

The films in this month's Books into Movies feature vary considerably in terms of plot and overall theme, but each promises to attract a sizeable audience. Fans of science fiction will not want to miss Day Watch, the second installment of a trilogy based on Sergei Lukyanenko's bestselling sci-fi novels. Moviegoers both young and old will be taking out their magnifying glasses on June 15th when one of America's most popular female detectives, Nancy Drew, comes to life on the big screen. And last but certainly not least is A Mighty Heart, adapted from Mariane Pearl's written account of the disappearance and eventual murder of her husband, Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl.

If you prefer watching movies from the comfort of your own home, then we suggest tuning in to The Starter Wife on USA Network. Based on Gigi Levangie Grazer’s New York Times bestseller of the same name, this six-hour miniseries stars Debra Messing as Molly Kagan, who searches to rediscover life after divorce. The premiere episode aired on Thursday night (May 31st); it will be replayed multiple times on Saturday, June 2nd starting at 10:00 AM EST, and the remainder of the series can be seen every Thursday night until June 28th.
