Erin Go Brau and Books

Here in New York a "wintry mix" is falling, which is just plain cruel after the temperatures got to 70 a few days ago. Wintry mix sounds pretty; it's not.

For tomorrow's St. Patrick's Day Parade, my alma mater, Fordham University, wrote to alumni asking if they would like to march in the parade along with fellow alums and wear a sash. I can get a buffet lunch and the sash for $40. Now I like parades as much as the next person, but I confess that this parade is my least favorite since the streets seem to be lined with green beer drinking fools determined to make reckless idiots of themselves. Thus I am opting out in favor of making corned beef and cabbage here for the family and some neighbors. I do wonder if the sash is green, and I have to say that the idea of this did sound intriguing for a few moments, the thought of which scares me and heads me towards reading a book to get sane again.

My son is thinking of applying to Fordham and is in a panic reading this since he thinks my negativity may affect his chances of getting in since he is sure that everything is now cross-referenced to see attitudes about the school on every level. So maybe I should rephrase and say, I would be happy to march with the Fordham group and it's only the inclement weather that has me reconsidering and this has nothing to do with my alma mater. I am sure the lunch and the sash will be lovely and this is a great idea.

Now on to a bookish track with this week's news. Last Sunday I sat on the couch reading THE WILDE WOMEN by Paula Wall, which is the inaugaural title in our new Southern Writers feature. I love southern writers, and I wanted to do something to spotlight their work. THE WILDE WOMEN is a really fun romp of a book. It's about two very bodacious southern sisters and their equally bodacious mother and their adventures falling in love with ALL the wrong men. It's set during the Prohibition in Tennesee. Readers interested in previewing and commenting on the book should send their names and mailing addresses to [email protected] by March 30th. We will be picking 20 winners.

Many of you have come to know Wendy Corsi Staub from MOST LIKELY TO DIE, the title she wrote with Lisa Jackson and Beverly Barton. This week we are spotlighting her and her new title, DON'T SCREAM, which is a sexy, scary read. Readers interested in previewing and commenting on the book should send their names and mailing addresses to [email protected] by March 30th.

Many of you know how much I LOVED Joan Didion's book, THE YEAR OF MAGICAL THINKING. I am happy to share that this book has been adapted by Didion to a play, which is getting a ton of pre-opening curtain buzz. It's coming to Broadway for a strictly limited twenty-four-week engagement starring Academy Award and Tony Award® winner Vanessa Redgrave. It's directed by Academy Award and Tony Award nominee David Hare. We have a link to a special offer where you can save up to 43% on the ticket price. Please note the best seats are available from June 1st. I am not a huge Broadway fan, but this is one I definitely want to see.

I got a note this week that The Bantam Dell Publishing Group has announced the opening of The Bantam Dell Book Shop and Café on Second Life®, the groundbreaking social networking 3D virtual world, created by Linden Lab®, entirely built and owned by its residents and currently inhabited by more than four million residents around the world. The shop is located in Second Life on Sheep Island, where residents will be able to shop for and buy actual books published by Bantam Dell. Do note that books need to arrive in the real world via some oh-so-conventional delivery method.

Also this week, Elizabeth Crook, author of THE NIGHT JOURNAL, answers reader questions here. Our Word of Mouth Contest books are WHAT THE DEAD KNOW by Laura Lippman and YOU DON'T LOVE ME YET by Jonathan Lethem. Want to enter to win them? Then tell us what you are reading here, and rate it.

Happy St. Patrick's Day one and all. (for the record, I am Irish by marriage!) Spring arrives next Wednesday, and Thursday I am off to the Virginia Festival of the Book in Charlottesville, which is one of my favorite weekends of the year. Some people like spa weekends; I like book festival weekends. Have a great week of reading.

Announcing Our Southern Writers Author Spotlight --- Our First Featured Author is Paula Wall, Author of THE WILDE WOMEN

We are thrilled to be kicking off our inaugural Southern Writers Author Spotlight with Paula Wall, the national bestselling author of THE ROCK ORCHARD. In THE WILDE WOMEN --- coming out April 17th --- Paula brings her signature charm and wit to the tale of two sisters with a talent for seduction and the unfortunate habit of falling for the wrong man every time.

More about THE WILDE WOMEN:
The Wilde sisters dove headfirst into this world on fire with life and expectation. With hair black as midnight and eyes blazing blue, they grow into truly irresistible women. But as well as being blessed with beauty and determination, the Wilde sisters are cursed with equal tastes for mischief and bad men. And both of these appetites always lead to trouble. Love either lifts a woman up or drags her down. When a Wilde woman dies, they don't have to dig a hole.

On Black Friday in Five Points, Tennessee, Pearl Wilde finds her sister, Kat, in the barn wearing both her favorite shoes and her fiancé. As quick to fury as she is to passion, Pearl leaves town immediately. She returns five years later a sophisticated femme fatale, with her claws sharpened like stainless steel and a demeanor so cool that the townspeople can no longer tell if she even has sweat glands. Slowly and deliberately, Pearl begins her revenge on Kat by captivating all the men of Five Points, but all the while never forgetting the one man who had the power to break her heart.

In THE WILDE WOMEN, Paula Wall once again bewitches the reader with humor, sass, smarts, and sensuality, creating a hilarious and beguiling world where sometimes the best revenge is forgiveness.

David Morrell's CREEPERS was a publishing event in 2005, a powerful, edgy, dark thriller by a master of the genre. A New York Times bestseller, it won the prestigious Bram Stoker Award and earned numerous critical raves. SCAVENGER, Morrell's latest novel, takes us in a harrowing new direction: a desperate high-tech scavenger hunt for a 100-year-old time capsule. Frank Balenger, the resolute but damaged hero of CREEPERS, now finds himself trapped in a nightmarish game of fear and death. To save himself and the woman he loves, he must play by the rules of a god-like Game Master with an obsession for unearthing the past. But sometimes the past is buried for a reason.

SCAVENGER is a brilliant, frightening hunter-hunted tale that layers modern technology over the dusty artifacts of earlier times. The result is a surreal palimpsest, one that contains the secret of survival for Balenger and a handful of unwilling players who race against the game's clock to solve the puzzle of the time capsule, only to discover that time is the true scavenger. Morrell's trademark action sequences are embedded with fascinating historical clues that make SCAVENGER a thrill-a-minute page-turner as well as a mesmerizing literary experience.

In THE CAMEL BOOKMOBILE Fi travels to settlements where people have never held a book in their hands. Her goal is to help bring Dr. Seuss, Homer, Tom Sawyer, and Hemingway to a largely illiterate and semi-nomadic populace. However, because the donated books are limited in number and the settlements are many, the library initiates a tough fine: if anyone fails to return a book, the bookmobile will stop coming.

Katharine Lawrence has no idea what hit her. The attack came out of nowhere. Only hours earlier she had been enjoying a girls-only weekend with an old college friend. She only knows that, unless they can escape, whatever it is could end up getting both her and Lisa killed.

But Katharine’s nightmare is only just beginning. When she awakens in a Washington hospital, her nose crushed, her body battered, her brain tells her things aren’t right –-- and it’s not the attack that’s disorienting her. She doesn’t recognize herself when she looks in the mirror: her slim body, her manicured hands, her blond bob. And the smiling, handsome doctor at her bedside –-- Dr. Dan Howard –-- is familiar, but in a totally unfamiliar way. Perhaps the trauma of the attempt on her life has given her some kind of weird amnesia. She’s twenty-nine, the special assistant to the head of the CIA, and she’s lucky to be alive. She also knows she can trust no one.
