Late June 2010

Saving Our Libraries and Happy Fourth of July!

I hope you're enjoying your summer as much as I am. It's hard to believe that July 4th is already upon us! What happened to June? I hope you all will be able to share the holiday with family and friends, and celebrate all that makes our nation great. This is always a special time for reflection as well as honoring our servicemen and women at home and abroad who sacrifice every day for our country. I love fireworks and am hoping I can find a display of them somewhere near the house as I am not traveling this weekend. So many towns have slashed fireworks from their budgets with so many other things requiring their dollars.

Speaking of allocating money, I just came back from Washington, DC where I attended the American Library Association's Annual Conference, and what a whirlwind of a trip that was! In addition to the usual panels, author events and exhibits, there was a special Library Advocacy Day on Tuesday where library supporters from across the country gathered on U.S. Capitol grounds to bring attention to the need to stop the widespread budget cuts and closings affecting our libraries. I've written about this problem in past newsletters and in fact wrote this piece for the Huffington Post last week where I talk about what happened when the town council threatened to close my hometown library. It was a true act of democracy to see what unfolded. I urge you to visit your local library and see how you can get involved. Often library cuts do not get widespread attention until it's too late. It was wonderful to see such unity for this cause in Washington all championing the same message.

Author Talk: Kathleen Y'Barbo, Author of ANNA FINCH AND THE HIRED GUN

Kathleen Y’Barbo is the author of numerous contemporary and historical romances, including GOLDEN TWILIGHT, CAJUN HEARTS and BUILDING DREAMS. The second installment in her All That Glitters series, ANNA FINCH AND THE HIRED GUN, centers on an independent and headstrong young woman with an inconvenient attraction to the detective hired to protect her as she pursues her journalistic aspirations in 1885 Colorado. In this interview, Y’Barbo explains how she first became interested in tales of the Old West and discusses how a visit to author Margaret Mitchell’s house served as inspiration for this story. She also shares some fascinating but little-known facts about legendary figures Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday, elaborates on the role faith plays in the lives of her characters, and hints at what readers can look forward to in the next book in the series.
