Early March 2010

Celebrating the Lenten Season

I am very much looking forward to the arrival of spring; it cannot come soon enough. These past few days in New York have been glorious! This winter has been rough, not only for those in the Northeast, but nationwide. I remember reading not too long ago that 49 states had snow on the ground at the same time just a week or two ago. Hawaii, obviously, was the exception, though I have been told since then that there ARE mountains in Hawaii that could see snow. Who knew?

With the upcoming arrival of spring also comes the anticipation of Easter Sunday on April 4th. To celebrate the most holy season of Lent, we are pleased to bring you our 2010 Easter roundup, which spotlights a variety of titles perfect for this very special time of year. I especially enjoy seeing the selections for younger readers because they bring back so many memories of my boys on Easter morning celebrating and reading together. I know there will be more than a title or two to pique your interest.

This month we will see the release of Francine Rivers's eagerly anticipated new novel, HER MOTHER'S HOPE, which is releasing on March 16th as the first in a two-book saga. Readers are in for quite a treat with this one. We're spotlighting HER MOTHER'S HOPE on Bookreporter.com right now, and you can see our feature here. We'll have more to come on HER MOTHER'S HOPE here on FaithfulReader.com soon, but we wanted to mention to those in Texas that Francine will be speaking and signing at events in Fort Worth, Dallas and Houston along with author Beth Moore on March 19th and 20th. You can check out specifics about these events here.

This month we're excited to be hosting a giveaway for Liz Curtis Higgs's latest book, HERE BURNS MY CANDLE, a historical novel set in feudal Scotland. Enter here for your chance to be one of the 20 winners who will be awarded a copy.

In other news, we've posted an interview with Don Hoesel, whose new novel, HUNTER’S MOON, is now available in stores. Although presently living in the Nashville area, he chose his native upstate New York as the setting for his latest effort and reveals his still-strong connections to the area.

Seven new study guides have been added to the site: LISTEN by Rene Gutteridge, ANGEL’S DEN by Jamie Carie, DELIVER US FROM EVIL by Robin Caroll, SCATTERED PETALS by Amanda Cabot, A DISTANT MELODY by Sarah Sundin, THE PROMISE OF MORNING by Ann Shorey and ONCE IN A BLUE MOON by Leanna Ellis. It’s one of the more diverse lineups we’ve featured recently, and there are more than enough suggestions here to keep you busy.

We are also pleased to share nine new reviews with you. In our Faithful Fiction section, we review ABIGAIL by Jill Eileen Smith, the second book in her Wives of King David series. Other fiction reviews include MR. DARCY BROKE MY HEART by Beth Pattillo, NEVER SAY NEVER by Lisa Wingate and BLACKOUT by Jason Elam and Steve Yohn. Jason Elam is a name that may be familiar to some of you as he is an NFL placekicker, formerly of the Denver Broncos and now with the Atlanta Falcons. This is his third Riley Covington thriller that he wrote with Steve Yohn, his pastor.

Our Christian Living reviews include SO LONG INSECURITY: You've Been a Bad Friend to Us by Beth Moore, A NEW KIND OF CHRISTIANITY: Ten Questions that are Transforming the Faith by Brian D. McLaren, LIVING ON THE EDGE: Dare to Experience True Spirituality by Chip Ingram and 66 LOVE LETTERS: A Conversation with God that Invites You into His Story by Dr. Larry Crabb. Our Marriage and Family Life review is the latest from John and Stasi Eldredge, LOVE & WAR: Finding the Marriage You’ve Dreamed Of.

Here’s to clear skies and warmer temperatures for all of you. And if the weather in the New York City area this week is any indication, the worst is behind us. At least I hope so!
