QUESTIONS FROM READERS

Judith from Olympia, WA: How is it that you know so much about the Pacific Northwest?

Laurie R. King: I lived in Tacoma, WA for many years, both in Dash Point and out near PLU. Summers were often spent camping either in the Olympic peninsula or the San Juans (in the long-ago days when a person could just drive up to a campgrounds, and not have a reservation made months before.)

Barbara from New York, NY: What did the Emperor summon them to do in Japan, enroute to San Francisco? What did they investigate in France or Italy after Mary was shot in 1919 and/or between their wedding in 1921 and the summer of 1923? When will they join up again with Ali, Marsh and Iris to investigate Sidney Darling's involvement in shady business and politics in 1920s Berlin? What will their children be like?

Laurie R. King: Too many questions, too few answers. The Japanese tale lies somewhere in the future, as does whatever they got up to in Europe after the War. I would very much like to return to Ali and Marsh/Mahmoud, although it's probably more likely that we'll meet Iris again long before that.

Judie from Chicago, IL: How will you keep Mary Russell fresh yet maturing while keeping Holmes vital yet not aging?

Laurie R. King: Russell is in her early twenties, so she is still maturing. Holmes the beekeeper, of course, takes his royal jelly regularly, which helps keep him physically young, while keeping up with Russell, who challenges him to stay on his toes mentally.

Besides Holmes and Russell, do you think we will meet any characters from LOCKED ROOMS in any future books, Hammett perhaps?

Laurie R. King: I doubt Dashiell Hammett will travel to England in (his) near future, and I have no plans to drag Russell and Holmes to New York or Hollywood, although one never knows. Perhaps one of those small Irregulars?
