Have you previously read a book by George Rabasa?
No, I have not. Prior to this title, I had not actually heard of this author.
What other literary fiction authors do you usually read?
Where to begin! I am a fan of many genres, but favor fiction. Here are a few of my top authors: Patricia Cornwell, James Patterson, John Sanford, Stephenie Meyer, L. J. Smith, Melissa Marr... a sampling.
What did you think of THE WONDER SINGER?
Overall, I have to say that I enjoyed the book. Would I have picked it up off the shelf had I not been given the chance to read it this way? Maybe not, as the summary itself only vaguely drew my eye. However, once I began the story, all attention is diverted to following Mercè Casals's life and events as delivered through Mark Lockwood (a writer).
I especially loved the fact that music was intertwined (if not a palpable pulse) throughout the story. It adds another dimension that the reader can follow the experience up with in the end.
Would you ever read a future book by George Rabasa?
Certainly.

What did you think of THE WONDER SINGER?
It was well written. I felt it explored her life, unhappy marriage, and addiction to the life the prince gave her. With all her talent, did she ever find peace?

I've never read a book by him and I've never heard of him.
What other literary fiction authors do you usually read?
I read lots of literary fiction: in the past month or so I've read Lynn Freed's THE SERVANTS' QUARTERS, Lewis Robinson's WATER DOGS, Joan London's THE GOOD PARENTS, Wally Lamb's THE HOUR I FIRST BELIEVED, THE MEMORY OF RUNNING by Ron McLarty and MUDBOUND by Hilary Jordan.
What did you think of THE WONDER SINGER?
I'm enjoyed THE WONDER SINGER and find that I'm thinking of it at odd moments. That's always a sign for me that the book is good. It's allowed me to enter its world. I think the writing is very good, and I like his style. However,I'm not sure I'm fully engaged with the characters. They're interesting and quirky, but I'm not that invested in their welfare.
Would you ever read a future book by George Rabasa?
I'll look for his next book for sure.

What other literary fiction authors do you usually read?
Isabel Allende, Gregory Maguire, Mary Doria Russell, Margaret Atwood, Anna Quindlen and Sarah Addison Allen.
What did you think of THE WONDER SINGER?
Overall, I enjoyed reading this book. I found that the sections in which Mercè Casals is not an active participant becomes uninteresting and implausible (the characters don't seem to behave true to the form that had been established for them). But when Casals appears in the story, whether through flashbacks or the autobiography, everything comes alive, and even though it is fictional, I felt like I was reading about a fascinating person.
Would you ever read a future book by George Rabasa?
Absolutely!

What did you think of THE WONDER SINGER?
The book was okay. I enjoyed reading about her life and her husband's, but the storyling about the writer took away from the story. It might have been better if it was just about her.
