Contest Entries

It's really no surprise. The old Valentine's Day saying rings true --- Bookreporter.com readers like their romantic characters tall, dark, handsome and mysterious. Rhett Butler and Scarlett O'Hara from GONE WITH THE WIND tied for first place as readers' favorite romantic characters, with Heathcliff from WUTHERING HEIGHTS coming in a close second. Not far behind him was Mr. Darcy, both Elizabeth Bennett's and Bridget Jones's. And with a strong fourth place showing was Ranger in Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series.

Here's what some of our entrants had to say:

Danyelle from Beaverton, OR answerd: "Mr. Darcy from PRIDE AND PREJUDICE is my favorite romantic character in a novel. I have read that book at least 50 times, and that character always makes my heart skip a beat."

Heather from Orlando, FL answered: "Superman/Clark Kent --- turns back time to save his love. Aawwwww!"

Trish from Burke, VA answered: "Roarke in all the Eve Dallas stories by J.D. Robb (Nora Roberts)."

Karen from Bensenville, IL answered: "My favorite would have to be Zorro in the novel ZORRO."

Carrie from Wrightsville Beach, NC answered: "Jim Young in O. Henry's GIFT OF THE MAGI (of course, Della too)."

Stephanie from Vinton, VA answered: "My favorite romantic character in a book is Jay Gatsby from THE GREAT GATSBY by F. Scott Fitzgerald"

Julie from Saint Peters, MO answered: "Jack McGill from the book COAST ROAD by Barbara Delinsky."

Marcia from Paradise, CA answered: "T.S. Garp from THE WORLD ACCORDING TO GARP by John Irving."

Matthew from Chelsea, OK answered: "I don't have one --- right now my favorite reading material is about trucks!"

David from Scottsdale, AZ answered: "Romeo in ROMEO AND JULIET."

Kathleen from Arvada, CO answered: "Elfrida Phipps in WINTER SOLSTICE by Rosamunde Pilcher."

Petra from Anaheim, CA answered: "The most romantic character in a book is --- and I know it sounds crazy --- Sherlock Holmes. All the surroundings of the Victorian Era make every book something really special to me."

Leslie from St. Charles, IL answered: "Noah Calhoun from THE NOTEBOOK and THE WEDDING."

Diane from Cedar Rapids, IA answered: "Howard Roark in THE FOUNTAINHEAD by Ayn Rand."

Dan from Coon Valley, WI answered: "My wife and she is a character!!!"
