The 2004 National Book Award Winners


The winners of the 2004 National Book Awards were announced November 17, at a ceremony at the New York Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City. The annual awards are given by the National Book Foundation to recognize achievements in four categories: Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry and Young People's Literature. The night's ceremonies included the presentation of the National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters to Judy Blume.

This year's winners by category are:

FICTION:

Lily Tuck, THE NEWS FROM PARAGUAY (HarperCollins)

NONFICTION:

Kevin Boyle, ARC OF JUSTICE: A Saga of Race, Civil Rights, and Murder in the Jazz Age (Henry Holt)

YOUNG PEOPLE'S LITERATURE:

Pete Hautman, GODLESS (Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers)

POETRY:

Jean Valentine, DOOR IN THE MOUNTAIN: New and Collected Poems, 1965-2003 (Wesleyan University Press)


The 2004 National Book Award Finalists


The finalists for the 2004 National Book Awards were recently announced by Garrison Keillor, who will host the National Book Awards Benefit Dinner and Ceremony in Manhattan on November 17th.

Among the Finalists are a first novelist, two distinguished historians, five prolific and established poets, two previous Finalists --- including the poet Donald Justice, who died earlier this year --- and the 9/11 Commission. All five Fiction Finalists are women who live in New York City. Also, five small presses have books on the list of Finalists.
