2003 National Book Award Winners

The winners for the 2003 National Book Awards were announced by novelist Walter Mosley, who will served as Master of Ceremonies at the Award Ceremony and Benefit Dinner on November 19th, 2003.

Here is the complete list of winners:

FICTION:

Shirley Hazzard, THE GREAT FIRE (Farrar, Straus and Giroux)

NONFICTION:

Carlos Eire, WAITING FOR SNOW IN HAVANA: Confessions of a Cuban Boy (Free Press)

YOUNG PEOPLE'S LITERATURE:

Polly Horvath, THE CANNING SEASON (Farrar, Straus and Giroux)

POETRY:

C.K. Williams, THE SINGING: Poems (Farrar, Straus and Giroux)


2003 National Book Awards Finalists

The finalists for the 2003 National Book Awards were recently announced by novelist Walter Mosley, who will serve as Master of Ceremonies at the Award Ceremony and Benefit Dinner on November 19th.

Nine of the authors selected are previous National Book Award Finalists. They include Shirley Hazzard, Polly Horvath, Edward P. Jones, Richard Peck, Charles Simic, Louis Simpson, Scott Spencer, C.K. Williams and Jacqueline Woodson. Also noteworthy is that Young People's Literature Finalist Paul Fleischman's father Sid Fleischman was a 1979 Finalist in the same category.
