The nominees for the 2001 National Book Awards ware recently announced, the titles being selected from 1,023 submissions by 208 publishers and imprints. Of the nomination announcement the foundation's Executive Director said, "During the month following the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, shock and grief have shaped our days. In these sobering times, we instinctively turn to literature for solace and reassurance. More than ever, this year's National Book Awards must inspire us to continue the cultural conversation."
