January 2nd might possibly be the most depressing day of the year. On the long march back to work, the winter suddenly seems unbearable --- suggestive not of crisp holiday nights aglow with twinkling lights and the promise of warm times with friends and family, but of an abiding, unforgiving cold. It's really, really cold. Once in the office you glance at your calendar. Gasp. Sigh. Pound head against monitor. Not a vacation in sight for months. And that pile of holiday cards...better dump them in the garbage to make room for that leaning tower of credit card bills. Worst of all --- at least for us complicated souls who are both hopelessly undisciplined yet terribly vain --- is the tight pants, the once comfortable now sausage-casing-like pants. So much food, so little excess fabric.
There's not much we at Bookreporter.com can do in the way of changing the weather, parlaying you a vacation or paying off your Visa. However, we can help you out with the tight pants. Whether you're just looking to get back into pre-holiday shape or your resolution for 2002 is a complete body overhaul, one/some/all of these books may prove an invaluable resource. Of the eight titles, some favor a more traditional approach to weight loss: stop stuffing your face with chips and go for a walk. Still others promote trendier health programs: calculating your BMI (body mass index), loading up on omega fats, following ancient Ayurvedic eating practices and principles. But whichever path you choose, here's to a healthy 2002!
