On April 28th, The Los Angeles Times named the winners of its annual Book
Prizes. Established in 1980, these awards recognize outstanding literary achievements in
nine categories: biography, current interest, fiction, history, mystery/thriller, poetry,
science and technology, and young adult fiction. There is also a prize for debut authors,
The Art Seidenbaum Award for First Fiction, which honors the work of the late Times
book editor and Book Prize program founder. The Los Angeles Times also gave its
Robert Kirsch Award to poet and City Lights publisher Lawrence Ferlinghetti. The Kirsch
Award is presented yearly to a living author whose focus is the American West. The award
is named after the late Robert Kirsch --- novelist, editor, teacher, and one of the
nation's foremost book critics --- who served as The Times' book critic for more
than 25 years prior to his death in 1980.
