Carol G
Wolf to the Slaughter by Ruth Rendell

3
I love Ruth Rendell's books. This is the first of the Wexford series I have read and couldn't put it down. I prefer her regular books to this detective series. It held my interest, but forgettable when finished.

joan
The Coroner's Lunch by Colin Cotterill

5
Unusual setting - Laos in the late 1970's. The main character is a retired doctor who is reluctantly recruited to be coroner. We learn a lot about politics, corruption in Laos. It is a satire and quite funny.

Soovie
Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience and Redemption by Laura Hillenbrand

5
A heartbreaking true story of Louis Zamperini with a true hero's ending. Actually, the story hasn't ended as Louis is still alive. The descriptions of war and the torture in Japanese prisoner camps were so disturbing. This book is not for the faint of heart, but it gives you the truth, not the John Wayne version of war.

nancy banks
The Soldier's Wife by Margaret Leroy

3
Pleasant but very slow.

Sandra Stableford
Bossypants by TIna Fey

4
A fun read!

Maxine Urso
Into the Light by Darcia Helle

4
Very exciting.

Ann
Unholy Covenant: A True Story of Murder in North Carolina by Lynn Chandler-Willis

5
A true story about a murder that happened in North Carolina. Starts out interesting and continues on this way. It happens in a quiet God-fearing community.

Fernanda Bueno
Cleopatra: A Life by Stacy Schiff

5
A gift for those who love a good novel and are history buffs at the same time. The author recreates the life of Cleopatra in such a wonderful and amazing way I couldn't put the book down. For those who don't really like history, it's a fun way to trick yourself into learning some of it.

beth wiltshire
State of Wonder by Ann Patchett

4
The book is very compelling. It raises all sorts of questions about medical research and human rights. I enjoyed the characters, especially Marina, Dr. Swenson and the Lakashi tribe, and learned a bit about Brazil and the Amazon region. I think it would be a good book for book group discussion.

beth wiltshire
And So It Goes: Kurt Vonnegut: A Life by Charles J. Shields

4
This biography reads like a novel. It is very clearly written and shows the "heartbreak" of Vonnegut's life. I read two of Vonnegut's novels in preparation for reading the biography, and plan to read more. I hope this book does well.

Heather
The Litigators by John Grisham

5
John Grisham's most entertaining, fun read to date! Highly recommend it, even to those of you who are not huge Grisham fans. A Harvard-educated attorney who is overworked and burned out ends up joining two ambulance chasers and they take the reader on quite a ride.

BJ Simon
The Betrayal of Trust by Susan Hill

3
Not her best, but I will continue to read this series.

Jean L
Killing the Blues by Michael Brandman

5
This is a Robert Parker's Jesse Stone adventure. In my opinion, the author has maintained the characters with the Parker flavor. I enjoyed reading the book and intend to watch for more in the series.

Jean L
Goodnight, Irene by Jan Burke

5
Thie is the first of the Irene Kelly series. She is a newspaper investigative reporter. She gets into investigating the death of a good friend. In doing so, she renews her connection with a policeman.

Jean L
Iron Lake by William Kent Krueger

5
This is the first book of a series set in Minnesota. A young boy comes across a dead body while delivering papers.

Jean L
Winter Hawk's Legend by Aimée Thurlo

4
I usually stay far away from romance books but this one has enough suspense in its pages that I really enjoyed reading it.

Allison Gardner
Day After Night by Anita Diamont

3
Very interesting story about life in Israel for Holocaust victims after World War II

Mary Rodriguez
A Song for My Mother by Kat Martin

4
If you are a Kat Martin book fan, this is another great read.

Tessa B
The Clocks by Agatha Christie

3
3.5 stars Audio book narrated by Robin Bailey. Spies, unknown dead men, purloined clocks, nosy neighbors, and a beautiful girl in distress.

Elaine
Man Seeks God by Eric Weiner

3
Not exactly what I expected, but an interesting read.

Richard B
The Attorney by Steve Martini

3
Martini writes legal thrillers and is usually compared with Scott Turow and John Grisham. This time he doesn't quite make it and he suffers in comparison to the other two titans of this genre. I'd really just give this 2 1/2 stars, but I rounded up.

Richard B
Thank You For Smoking by Christopher Buckley

3
Nick Naylor, chief spokesperson for the tobacco industry, is kidnapped and nearly killed with nicotine patches. His fellow "merchants of death" (the MOD squad) try to help him solve the crime. I appreciate the satire.

Rose Turner
The Amateur Marriage by Anne Tyler

4
This a rich and compelling novel about a mismatched marriage and its consequences, spanning three generations. The story takes place in Baltimore starting in the heat of WW II fervor. Michael and Pauline are propelled into a hasty wedding. But they never should have married. I am planning to take this novel to our next Book Club meeting for sharing. It is a different perspective on marriage and I found it quite an interesting read.

Dennis
Man Seeks God by Eric Weiner

2
Not my normal style of book, but somebody recommended it to me. It did have a few interesting phrases.

Jill Porco
The Girl in the Green Raincoat by Laura Lippmann

5
Considering this is a novella, it is a worthy addition to the Tess Monaghan canon by Laura Lippmann. This is a sort of Rear Window-style mystery where Tess, laid up in bed with pre-eclampsia, ponders the missing girl in the green raincoat that she has seen outside her window. In addition to Tess' usual detection, we gain more insight into Tess and Crow's relationship and into her best friend, Whitney Talbot, making this a good read.

Sheryl
Rules of Civility by Amor Towles

4
I love that era, and the book really does it justice. I highly recommend this book.

Sheryl
The Hellraiser of the Hollywood Hills by Jennifer Colt

5
This is such a cute series, I can't believe I've missed it. I look forward to playing catch-up with the rest of the series.

Debbie Rodgers
The Book of Lies by Mary Horlock

4
Set on Guernsey in the Channel Islands in 1985 and, in memories and flashback, during the German occupation of the Islands during WWII. Told from the point of view of a teenage girl who is hiding her involvement with the death of a school mate. A well-told story with lots of new-to-me information.

Debbie Rodgers
The Spare Room by Helen Garner

4
This novel by Australian author Garner, is based on her personal experience of helping a friend with cancer through the last months of her life, spent living in Garner’s titular spare room. Because it feels like non-fiction, some of the emotions seemed almost too personal for print. A book to make you think about death, friendship, and emotional honesty.

Debbie Rodgers
A State of Wonder by Ann Patchett

3
Much-hyped novel set in the Amazon as drug company employee goes looking for a missing research doctor. Not what I expected: it was a little far-fetched, but the writing is beautiful.

Debbie Rodgers
Grey Mask by Patricia Wentworth

3
The very first Miss Maud Silver mystery, written in and set in 1928. Decent mystery, interesting to see Miss Silver in the early days before the character was fully developed.

Debbie Rodgers
The Inferno by Dante Alighieri

3
Approached through lots and lots of footnotes (how else can you read a 14th century Italian poet?) I felt I couldn’t really judge the poetry because of the translation issue. Dante imagined a place of eternal torments based on the teachings of his church, and peopled it with 14th century Florentines and Ancient Greeks. Judgmental, narrow in historical approach and doctrinally cringe-worthy.

Debbie Rodgers
The Distant Hours by Kate Morton

3
Set in England 1992 and 1942, this was promising, but fell so short of delivering. Chock-full of contrived and unbelievable coincidences and mysteries. Not at all up to the standard of The House at Riverton which I enjoyed so much. Even the final ‘reveal’, which is always brilliant in a Morton novel, couldn’t save it.

Debbie Rodgers
The Bishop Murder Case by S.S. Van Dine

3
Philo Vance mystery #4 but the first available to me in the Nova Scotia library system. Published in 1928. I know Vance is supposed to be a ‘dandy’ but the book seemed to me to be a vehicle for Van Dine to show off his knowledge of mathematics. Mystery was okay, time & setting (NYC) were delightful.

Nancy Clark
The Snowman by Jo Nesbo and Don Bartlett

4
This book was a real page-turner. I had to keep reading to see who the "Snowman" was. It's a very fast paced story with lots of twists and turns.

Nancy Clark
The Good Daughters by Joyce Maynard

4
The Good Daughters is a great saga of two families and how their lives intertwined with a really surprising ending.

Sally Coulson
Shock Wave by John Sandford

3
I have read all of Sandford's books in the Prey series, and one other in the Virgil Flowers series. There is something about Shock Wave, however, that does not keep my interest. I enjoy his characterizations, but this one seems to be a formula police procedural. I'm almost finished and it is picking up, but still will not be one of my favorites.

Sylvia Caplow
A History of the World in 100 Objects by Neil MacGregor

5
This is a tome to be read slowly one chapter at a time. Th objects date from 2,000,000 B.C. to 2010! The illustrations are beautiful. If you are interested in history and/or art, this is a book for you!!

Betty Stern
Bury Your Dead by Louise Penny

4
Penny, an award winning Canadian author, kept my attention throughout this mystery. In addition, she made me want to visit the old city of Quebec to meet the people and see the sites she so vividly describes.

Betty Stern
Room by Emma Donoghue

4
Could have been taken from the headlines of today! It is easy to emphasize with the characters.

Katie
Christmas in Sugarcreek by Shelly Shepard Gray

4
Great book about the Amish and faith.

Eileen Quinn Knight,Ph.D.
A Novel Bookstore by Laurence Cosse and Alison Anderson

5
This is a great story for book lovers! It is all about books with a side of romance, a fairytale, and a mystery! What more could anyone desire?

Anita Nowak
The Killing Game by Iris Johansen

4
This was the first book I have read by Ms. Johansen. I thought the mystery was fast passed and am looking forward to watching the movie that has been made (which I recorded). The end was quite a twist - which I like. However, I thought parts were a bit redundant and that's why I only gave it 4 stars. Anyone looking for an interesting fast read will not be disappointed.

Sally
Clara and Mr. Tiffany by Susan Vreeland

4
Interesting book of historical fiction. The information on Tiffany glass-making was fabulous.

Crystal
Murder in Baker Street: New Tales of Sherlock Holmes by Martin H. Greenberg, Jon L. Lellenberg & Daniel Stashower

5
Well-known, crime fiction writers penned the eleven original Sherlock Holmes stories in this collection. Each story is a delight.

Joanne Bozik
Tough Customer by Sandra Brown

5
I had won one of her books on GoodReads and I am hooked. Since then I've read so many of her books, she's a great author of thrills, suspense ... romance, sensual!!!!!!!!!

Dorothy
Dear John by Nicholas Sparks

5
I enjoyed this not many books make me cry but this one did. A young man who knows that his life in going the wrong way joins the service. His mother deserted him as an infant and although his father did his best his only interest was in collecting coins. When he returned on leave, he met a college student and they immediately fell in love and were looking forward to his discharge so they could marry. However, 9/11 happened and he reenlisted. Absence doesn't always make the heart grow fonder. She sent him a Dear John letter. Read on.

Dorothy
The Christmas Wedding by James Patterson and Richard DiLallo

4
Just a good, quick, easy read.

Dorothy
Zero Day by David Baldacci

5
I haven't finished this yet and I'm having a hard time putting it down. It is terrific.

JEAN MESS
What About Alice by Katherine Storm

5
A mystery, with murder, romance, friends and intrigue. The first page catches your interest. Lots of interesting characters. Great read and hard to put down.

Joan
Explosive Eighteen by Janet Evanovich

4
Stephanie visits Hawaii and things don't go smoothly. Part of the mystery involves what actually happened in Hawaii, and on the flight back. And, of course, things go even further downhill.

rebajane
The Good Father by Noah Hawley

5
Very powerful novel of a man's torment and quest to find answers when his son is found guilty of murdering a presidential candidate. Worthwhile reading for any parent.

Norene Wittlin
Paths of Glory by Jeffrey Archer

4
True stories are the best ...

julie
Live Free or Die by Jessie Crockett

3
This is about trying to track down an arsonist in a tiny town in Winslow Falls in New Hampshire. It's also a murder mystery. It's OK, but I think the author really paints the characters in this novel with a really broad brush. It's not the page-turner I thought it might be.

Ingrid Stukey
A Simple Amish Christmas by Vanetta Chapman

5
This is a great story for Christmas and I give it 5 stars.

Carolann Goslee
Wonderstruck by Brian Selznick

5
The writing is mesmerizing and the pictures are fabulous.

Helen
The Drop by Michael Connelly

4
Connelly is a consistently quality writer and Harry Bosch is my favorite character of his. I'm enjoying his latest.

Elizabeth V
22 Britannia Road by Amanda Hodgkinson

5
22 Britannia Road by Amanda Hodgkinson is a wonderful book. It was rated one of the best of 2010 by amazon.com, but I just got around to reading it. Hodgkinson manages to tell four stories at once without confusing the reader. Instead, her organization of the four stories to tell one story creates more drama.

Elizabeth V
When She Woke by Hillary Jordan

4
When She Woke by Hillary Jordan was a pleasant surprise for me. From what I had heard, I had expected a futuristic book about a world where abortion was a crime punishable by turning the criminal’s skin red. Yes, there’s that. But there’s so much more to it. And Jordan’s writing is superb.

Elizabeth V
A Thousand Lives: The Untold Story of Hope, Deception, and Survival at Jonestown by Julia Scheeres

3
A Thousand Lives: The Untold Story of Hope, Deception, and Survival at Jonestown by Julia Scheeres surprised me. I thought the story of Jim Jones, his cult, and the mass murder-suicide (which, according to what is now known, was actually a massacre) that ultimately occurred was an old one, that nothing new could be said about it. Most of us know Jim Jones was a cult leader who lead his followers to a mass murder-suicide at Jonestown. But there’s so much more to know now, and that new information is relayed in this book.

Colin Beierbach
Man Seeks God by Eric Weiner

3
Not my cup of tea. I found it boring in spots.

A. Thaxton
The Accident by Linwood Barclay

5
Fast-paced thriller that leaves you wanting to read more and more. The tight-knit neighborhood of women are involved in something they should not be and you can't put the book down until you read to find out why The Accident happened and what was going on with the women. Linwood Barclay never fails to keep you wanting to read his next novel.

Linda McHugh
House Rules by Jodi Picoult

4
As always, Jodi's research into her characters, an autistic young man in this case, is superb. You view the world through Jacob's eyes. Very enlightening.

Denise
Man Seeks God by Eric Weiner

4
Interesting book for a Sunday afternoon read.

Kathy Vallee
Deja Dead by Kathy Reichs

5
This is a new author for me and I really love her books. In this one, Tempe, who works with old bones gets involved with trying to get the police to believe her claim that there is a serial killer who has been killing right under their noses for years. They do not want to believe it, since it is their case. But when her best friend in the whole world gets caught up in it, everything gets 100% worse.Great book.

Julie Bockstiegel
Catherine the Great: Portrait of a Woman by Robert K. Massie

4
This is an absorbing portrait of one of the most interesting women in history. Massie obviously knows his Russian history and brings it to life in this biography. You have a real sense of Catherine both as a woman and a ruler. I feel like I have finally gotten "the truth" about this fascinating figure from the past.

Karen Terry
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot

5
I recommend this book for everyone. It is a very good read. It is about Henrietta Lacks and how her cells where grown in a lab without her knowledge. The HeLa cells were used around the world and how her family is left in poverty because of it. I am still reading it and it will keep you on the edge of your seat. It is written very well and it reads like a novel, but the story is true.

Lynn W
Nothing To Declare: Memoirs of a Woman Traveling Alone by Mary Morris

1
Ms Morris IS one gutsy woman - traveling alone through Mexico and Central America is not for the faint-of-heart. So why did she do it? Darn if I know. Her excursions were at the least annoying, at the most, brutal. If she found any joy in the journeys or the cultures she visited, she didn't write about them.

Margo
A Stolen Life: A Memoir by Jaycee Lee Dugard

5
This book was so sad and in a way, disgusting, because of all the years Jaycee had to endure with a sexual pervert and his wife. I don't know how she survived all those years. She was 11 years old when she was kidnapped, and 29 years old when she was finally freed. She had 2 daughters while in captivity, and she protects their privacy.

Nicole Aben
Anybody Out There? by Marian Keyes

5
There is a great twist in this book, which is also a nice funny light read.

Dianne
Salvage the Bones by Jesmyn Ward

5
This book started out slow and I almost gave up on it after about 50 pages. The author's character development endeared all the family to me, including China, the dog. This is a great read, rewarding each reader who does not give up on it. I was so glad I did not.

Keith M.
Lost in Shangri-La by Mitchell Zuckoff

5
This was a great book! I just finished it and could not put it down until I got to the end. Easy to read. It could have been an extremely boring recollection of a mishap. But the author did a tremendous amount of research and fit the story together to make it an extremely interesting read. It is on several lists of the "Best Books of 2011" and I think the recognition is well deserved. The author is a former Pulitzer Prize finalist and I can see why.

Laura
Man Seeks God by Eric Weiner

3
Not bad, so a quick read.

Marjorie Clark
The Litigators by John Grisham

3
Still reading this, but it is very good and unpredictable.

Lois Cairl
The Wind-Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami

4
Takes a while to get hooked, and then you are in it and can't wait to finish. The Japanese do well with stories about patience.

Lynn
Summer of Fire by Linda Jacobs

3
This is a fictional book that takes place during the wildfires of Yellowstone National Park. The storyline is good, but drags in some places.

marion miller
An American Boy by Larry Watson

4
I really loved this coming of age book. Many years ago I read Montana 1948 by the same author and I couldn't wait to talk about it. I felt the same way about this book. The characters are people you might meet at any time of your life. The young adult, Matt, is trying hard to fit into what he thinks is a privileged world. He jealously becomes part of another family thinking they will provide what is missing from his life. Many events occur and the ending is plausible. However, you get a little "agitated" along the way.

Bonnie Markiewicz
Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson

5
You have to admire a person who "knew" what we needed before we knew we needed it. A really enjoyable book about both his private life and his forward-looking business sense. He was a remarkable human being. Even though I am not up on all of the newest technology, I found the book easy to read and understand. Great way to get a real sense of the man.

M. Archer
I Think I Love You by Allison Pearson

5
After her mothers death a woman discovers that at 13 she actually won a trip to meet David Cassidy, her teen idol crush, in person. Remembering her 13 year old self and dealing with her own 13 year old she becomes determined to claim her prize even after all those years. This book was at times hilarious and at other very touching. It kept me smiling all the way through

M. Archer
The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvator

4
The best I have read by the author. An island known for racing magical killer water horses, a girl trying to save her home, and a boy who loves these horses more than anything until all three come together and they run the race of their lives.

T. Thomas
Prince of Ravenscar by Catherine Coulter

4
Not the usual romance novel with lots of twists and turns.

robin fuller
Started Early, Took My Dog by Kate Atkinson

5
This is her 3rd or 4th book in this series and I've enjoyed all of them. I like her style of writing and character development. I just finished 2 books by Susan Alpert about the Darling Dahlias. I also finished South of Broad by Pat Conroy. It was an excellent read.

Laura
Man Seeks God by Eric Weiner

4
I enjoyed his views and style of writing.

Marsha
V is for Vengeance by Sue Grafton

5
Kinsey Millhone continues her escapades as a private investigator. She notices a woman shoplifting in Nordstrom and the results of that enmesh her in a spider web of intrigue. She finds herself unraveling a professional shoplifting ring while she undertakes to help a few friends. Woven into the story line is a lonely wealthy wife, a petty burglar and a bereft widower. Lots a fun and thrills.

Irene Unger
The Final Reckoning by Sam Bourne

3
Suspenseful story of Holocaust revenge, of victims fighting back after the war.

Dianna D
The American Heiress by Daisy Goodwin

3
Mid 1800s love story between a very rich American and a Duke whose home is in much need of repair. Typical lover and after an heir is born realization that love has been found. A good read.

Debbie Mucha
The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman

5
Amazing book. I kept thinking about this book during the day at odd times. The strength of women when they work together sharing their pain, joy and sorrow. Great historical information. It is a book that I wish I did not read so I would have the pleasure of looking forward to reading it.

Fran
A Stolen Life by Jaycee Lee Dugard

4
Jaycee Dugard shares the story of her abduction at age 11 and her life since then. Jaycee resides with Philip Craig and his girlfriend Nancy Garrido in a backyard tent for more than 18 years. She shares her brutal, graphic experiences of being raped by Philip at the young age of 11 and everything she did to survive this ordeal. Jaycee gives birth to two girls by herself in the tent and tries to create a semblance of a home life within the confines of her tent and imprisonment. Jaycee shares her eventual discovery and rescue as well as the arduous process of reintegration back to a life she lost 18 years ago. Interesting dynamics regarding the experiences of a woman raised in captivity.

Ronald Roseborough
Cabinet of Earths by Anne Nesbet

5
Excellent book for young teens. A young girl, Maya, moves from California to Paris, France with her family. She meets a strange cast of characters who may be distant relatives of her family. A magical cabinet contains bottles of mysterious earth that hold the secret of immortality. A secret that may save her mother, who has been sick with cancer.

Dennis
Man Seeks God by Eric Weiner

Try it ... you might like it.

Jan Marino
Still Alice by Lisa Genova

5
This story is making me cry and laugh. Lisa has released my emotions with a wonderfully written book about Alzheimer's.I can't wait to red Left Neglected by Lisa Genova. This is her second book. A passionate author tells passionate stories. You mind as well order take out while you read. You won't be able to put it down.

Donna K
The Things We Do For Love by Kristin Hannah

4
A beautiful, well-written story about going home. I just love the whole family in this book.

Linda Johnson
The Bee-Loud Glade by Steve Himmer

5
If I hadn't gone to a book event last April, I might have missed this jewel. Really different and kept me guessing throughout. A man loses his job and because a recluse in his apartment, not shaving, showering or paying his bills for months. His previous job required sending e-mails, so when he gets an enticing e-mail he applies for and subsequently is hired to be a hermit on a rich man's property. Very interesting to watch the character development.

SALLY G.
Tag Man by Archer Mayor

3
Not the usual Joe Gunther. Slower moving with more confusion than more mystery.

Mary L Holshouser
V is for Vengeance by Sue Grafton

4
There are a lot of plots and a lot of characters. It's hard to remember who belongs with which plot. I liked the way it ended. Everybody got what they deserved.

Tessa B
Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay

3
Alternating chapters tell story of Sarah, her parents and brother - French Jews rounded up in WW2 - and of Julia Jarmond, an American journalist living in Paris in 2002, who begins researching the events and gets caught up in Sarah's story. Second half of book loses its way and descends into romantic claptrap.

Bonnie Gluhanich
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

3
It must be me, but if I weren't reading this to lead a book group discussion, I'd have put it down several chapters ago. As it is, I'm slogging through.

Colin
Man Seeks God by Eric Weiner

3
Interesting - but not spellbinding.

Lynn W
Trophy Hunt by C. J. Box

3
Fourth in the Joe Pickett, Wyoming game warden series. This one was a little bizarre --- strange dreams, aliens, animal and human mutilations --- but still an excellent mystery!

Sandy M
Under the Mercy Trees by Heather Newton

4
Thirty years ago, Martin Owenby came to New York City with dreams of becoming a writer. Now his existence revolves around cheap Scotch and weekend flings with equally damaged men. When he learns that his older brother, Leon, has gone missing, he must return to the Owenby farm in Solace Fork, North Carolina, to assist in the search. You will be thinking of these characters long after the final page.

Krismar Ramker
Protection for Hire by Camy Tang

5
Excellent, first-in-a-series book about a strong, independent young woman who finds herself involved in an intriguing and dangerous mystery. With a Christian theme, this book is sure to please.

Marsha
The Cat's Table by Michael Ondaatje

5
This delightful journey of an 11-year-old boy from Sri Lanka to London aboard a three-week voyage is full of wonderful insights. He meets two other boys and as they are virtually invisible to the adults, they explore the ship and tumble from one adventure to another.

Melanie
The Invisible Bridge by Julie Orringer

5
Without a doubt, this was the best book I've read in a long time and worth every minute of my time spent reading this 600+ page novel. The holocaust genre is filled with compelling and haunting stories, but this is surely one of the best. The characters were so realistic and the story so engaging. On the most simple level it was a great story, but on a deeper level it gave historical information about Hungary during WWII that I had previously been unaware of. I highly recommend this book!!! I can't believe it didn't win any literature prizes...

Lorna
The Snowman by Jo Nesbo

2
I just really couldn't get into this book. I just couldn't follow it. Seemed like it was going to be a really good mystery about a serial killer and people going missing but I just had a hard time following all the characters. This book was translated from Swedish and takes place in Europe, so maybe that's why I had a problem.

Ann Burch
U is for Undertow by Sue Grafton

5
I have read almost all of this series continuing the experiences of Kinsey Millhone, private detective, and this book is no disappointment. It is hard to put down. The story bounces back and forth from the present to the 1980's in small towns in California and connects several families from that era to the present in search of a resolution to what happened to a kidnapped girl in the past and what these people have to do with it. The mystery also involves somehow the death of a pet and the burial and what this has to do with the kidnapping, if anything. I haven't a clue and this makes for excellent reading material for a mystery novel.

Mary Brown
People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks

5
This novel is based on a true story of the Sarajevo Haggadah, a 14th-century holy book that is being restored. The restorer is fascinated by the details she finds in examining the book and the author takes you back in history to explain the mystery of the these details. The unraveling of the story of the book itself, along with the history involved, makes the book a wonderful read.

Reva W.
Smokin' Seventeen by Janet Evanovich

5
I loved this book. Stephanie is still trying to decide between the two men in her life when a third one is being pushed at her by her mother. Meanwhile, dead people keep popping up, including two who have signs on them. The ending was great, how it all came together.

Lori
The Good Father by Noah Hawley

5
Just read the ARC of this book and thought it was a great read - very thought-provoking and would be good for a book discussion group.

Debbie M
Crocodile on the Sandbank by Elizabeth Peters

2
This is the first in the Amelia Peabody series centered in Egypt and dealing with archaeology. Amelia is a woman who acts like a man and does not follow the womanly fashion of the day. When Amelia's scholarly father dies and leaves her his fortune, Amelia heads to Egypt. The story of the development of archaeology is interesting, but becomes a little cumbersome, at times. Amelia balances from being likable to being unbelievable. Amelia is a pioneer, and at times, the reader forgets that Amelia is a female. The story goes slowly, and then the ending is completed in one short chapter, almost as an afterthought.

Ani
The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein

5
A funny, touching story of a dog and his humans full of racing references and bits of heartfelt advice. At times sad, yet uplifting.

Tricia Douglas
V is for Vengeance by Sue Grafton

4
Grafton's stories are always intriguing and Kinsey Millhone always gets herself in the middle of the action. This is another one of Grafton's well-done books, this time based on shoplifting and crime lords. It moved a little slowly in spots, but as a dedicated reader, nothing would ever stop me from not finishing the book. I can't wait for the next book in this LONG, wonderful series.

Laura
Man Seeks God by Eric Weiner

3
An okay read. I may have missed something.

Sheryl
Hot Water by Erin Brockovich and C.J. Lyons

5
I love this series. The second installment "Hot Water" was much better than the first "Rock Bottom." I look forward to reading more of this series.

Sheryl
Robert B. Parker's Killing the Blues by Michael Brandman

I was nervous about starting this one because I loved Robert Parker. But I have to admit, Michael Brandman had Jesse down pat. He had been working with Parker on the television series so I'm sure that's why he carried over so well.

Come in and Cover Me by Gin Phillips

4
I received this book as an ARC from Penguin Group books. It is about 4 people on an archaeological dig in New Mexico. They are looking mainly for pottery shards that were left hundreds of years ago by groups of people who once inhabited the area. This book is an engrossing love story between Ren and Silas, one of the other diggers, and an intriguing look into the world of archaeology, love, and the paranormal.

Kellie
The Last Juror by John Grisham

4
I told someone today, I have never read a Grisham book I didn’t like. Of course, some I have liked more than others. This, I would put in the middle of the pack. The setting is Mississippi during the early 70’s. The main character is the new owner of the local newspaper, Willie. Grisham’s usual genre is legal thriller. This book does have some legal thrill, however, the focus is journalism. I little track off the beaten path of your usual Grisham work. The plot focuses around a trial where a local young man is charged and convicted of the murder of a young single mother of 2 young children. The local guy comes from a family that is know for it’s dishonesty, cheating, mob like existence on an island just outside of town. Due to the leniency of the Mississippi law, the murderer is released on parole. Now things really start to heat up when 2 of the jurors from the murder trial are murdered. One of the jurors Willie has become dear friends with, is on guard. This juror is a black woman named Miss Callie. Miss Callie and her husband, Esau, raised 8 children and 7 of the 8 had PHD’s. Willie wrote a story about Miss Callie and her family and they became great friends. I really enjoyed the journalistic angle Grisham took with this novel. I just wished his ending had a little more meat to it. I was left with unanswered questions. And since Grisham does not write series, I’ll never know the answer. Great author, good book.

The Long Goodbye by Megan O'Rourke

4
This reminded me of Joan Didion's memoir about the death of her husband. O'Rourke is writing about her mother's death from cancer and how she deals with both the illness and the loss. It is a moving book most of the time.

Marcia Sailer
The Autobiography of Mr. Tom Thumb by Melanie Benjamin

5
This is an engaging novel about Lavina Bump, only 32 inches tall. It tells of her spunky personality which refuses to be babied for her "disability." She becomes one of P.T Barnum's main attractions and agrees to the publicity stunt of a marriage. I don't want to give away the many turns of Lavina's fascinating life. You'll have to read the book to find out more. I think this would be a great discussion book.

A true murder story that happened in North Carolina. The cops think its the one preacher's son that killed the lady. A good story in paperback.

Sweet Judy Blue Eyes: My Life in Music by Judy Collins

4
I have listened to Judy Collins since my early twenties. I have always found a fascination learning about the time periods of different musicians. This is a blend of her friendships with other artists and her struggle to reach sobriety. A very good read. I wish I could hear the music in the background as I am reading the novel.

11/22/63 by Stephen King

4
An epic look at time travel and America in the 60s/currently. What would you do if you could go back in time and kill Oswald? What would you do if it came down to a choice between love or the good of the world? More of a return to his old form with plenty of nods to past work it is a great tale told well by Mr. King.

The Burning Edge by Rick Mofina

5
As a bookseller for 25 years nothing makes me happier than to introduce another thriller author - RICK MOFINA. I have read all his Jack Gannon series and I can honestly say Jack is the man to beat in that genre. His books always grab you first page and take you on a roller coaster ride to the last page. You can jump in anywhere in his series, but I guarantee after reading The Burning Edge you will run to the bookstore for his other books.

Tessa B
Sarah's Key by Tatiana De Rosnay

3
Alternating chapters tell story of Sarah, her parents and brother - French Jews rounded up in WWII - and of Julia Jarmond, an American journalist living in Paris in 2002, who begins researching the events and gets caught up in Sarah's story. Second half of book loses its way and descends into romantic claptrap.

The Help by Kathryn Stockett

4
4.5 **** A fast, easy, entertaining book about 1962 Jackson MS, and the relationships between black maids and the white women who employ them. Audio book performed by Jenna Lamia, Bahni Turpin, Octavia Spencer, and Cassandra Campbell. The fine job done by these 4 narrators earns the book an additional 1/2 star to my rating.

Rosanne Sharkey
The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh

3
I was drawn to the book by the title which didn't disappoint. I did come away with a lot of information regarding the meaning behind the flower. Honestly, though, I found the book extremely frustrating to read. I wanted Victoria to rise to the occasion and move on with her life and stop the pity party. I was upset that it gave foster care such a negative image. There are many wonderful foster families who have dedicated themselves to the loving care of abandoned children. Rarely does it go wrong.

Very interesting way of writing ... just phrases. Reminds me a little of Still Alice but with a murder twist to it. I'm half-finished and totally enjoying it.

Red Mist by Patricia Cornwell

1
What a disappointment! If you haven't read the last few books written by Patricia Cornwell, you will find it almost impossible to enjoy Red Mist. There are explanations embedded in the plot as it unfolds, but following them is so confusing that I just gave up trying.

Lorraine Kleinwaks
Falling Together by Marisa De Los Santos

5
This book is beautifully written, and the story compelling. It is also very different than the author's first two bestsellers -- Belong To Me and Love Walks In -- which were very good/heartwarming and similar. With Falling Together, the author takes the reader to a part of the world she knows about -- the Philippines, where her father is apparently from. The book is set both in the US and the Philippines. I read something the author wrote explaining her background. I loved this book and highly recommend it. This is the first time I've submitted a recommendation for this contest.

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See

4
This is a good book that I normally would not have picked up, but after seeing so many great reviews about it, I decided I was intrigued and needed to read it. The book talks about two girls in 19th century China who are paired as "laotong" or old sames, which is a fancy word for pen pals. A beautiful story!

11/22/63 by Stephen King

4
Don't ignore this book just because it's Stephen King. I tell people I am reading (and loving) this book and they say, "Oh, I don't like scary books." Stephen King is so much more than "The Shining" (though I loved that book, too!) 11/22/63 is a perfect example of how much more King can be. It's history, a little sci-fi (just a touch, really), mystery and a love story. Don't be put off by the 800+ pages either-- this story reads so easily and quickly.

Katwalk by Karen Kijewski

4
A fellow mystery book club member recommended this. I had a hard time finding it, but not at all hard time reading it. Kat Colorado, the PI, has adventures while breaking one of her cardinal rules of not working for a friend. Think of a sophisticated Stephanie Plum or Wollie Shelley and you'll get close to Kat.

Lesley Fry
The Housekeeper and The Professor by Yoko Ogawa

5
The Housekeeper and The Professor is the story of a relationship that develops between a housekeeper with an eight year old son and the professor for whom she keeps house. An accident has left the professor able to remember only what has occurred in the last eighty minutes and he keeps little notes pinned to his clothes to remind him of things. Each day the housekeeper must re-introduce herself and start anew, but somehow all three of them develop a close and rewarding friendship. This is a lovingly crafted book that leaves the reader with a smile.

Who would think that reading a book about the plague could be so interesting? I put off reading this for several months thinking it would be gruesome, but it's not; it's actually elegant and up-lifting. One of the best books I've read this year ... four stars ... maybe even 4.5.

The Happy Table of Eugene Walter by Don Goodman and Thomas Head

5
Odd that I would say I am currently reading a "cookbook". Chuckle if you like. But this is hardly "a cookbook". Yes it has great recipes in it. But the stories and funny things in this book deserve the attention of anyone wanting a fun day or two of reading. Then go back and study the "recipes". After all, yes, this is supposed to be a book featuring spirits in the food and drink of the South.

Live Free or Die by Jessie Crockett

4

Pearl of China by Anchee Min

4
Historical fiction about Pearl S. Buck. Our reading group read the book and to celebrate our 20th Anniversary, we went to visit Pearl S. Buck's home in PA. The house was decorated for the holidays, we enjoyed a delicious box lunch with our docent and started a discussion about Pearl Buck. Then he took us on a fabulous tour of the house and the many Christmas trees. Following the tour, the docent lead a book discussion on our book selection (recommended in the Book Reporter). We all loved the book and the tour. Great celebration.

11/22/63 by Stephen King

5
I love Stephen King's books, but I think I like this one the best because I actually lived through the assassination of JFK. It reminds of how things were back then regarding race relations and many of the objects we take for granted (cell phones) which were not even invented back then - the main character finds himself almost lost when he has to use a rotary phone! Wonderful book and I recommend it to everyone!

A Time in Between by Maria Duenas

4
Interesting novel. A young seamstress meets handsome man who sweeps her off her feet, literally. She ends up in North Africa, fending for herself. She is then recruited by MI6 to the build-up of WWII. Interesting from that side of the world, history-wise. And good plot besides. Enjoyed!

Husbands May Come and Go but Friends are Forever by Judith Marshall

The Glass Castle: A Memoir by Jeannette Walls

3
Jeannette Walls is the author of Half Broke Horses, a book which tells the story of Walls' grandmother. In this memoir, she tells her own story. Telling too much will spoil it. While enjoyable, it was not a personal story I will think about too often, but it is worth reading especially if you've read Half Broke Horses.

An Invisible Thread: The True Story of an 11-Year-Old Panhandler, a Busy Sales Executive, and an Unlikely Meeting with Destiny by Laura Schroff and Alex Tresniowski and Valerie Salembier

4
This is the true story of a friendship between an 11-year-old New York City street panhandler and a successful 30s business woman. Laura Schroff is on her way home from work one evening when a black boy asked her if she had any loose change. She ignored him at first, but she soon found herself heading back to him to tell him if he was hungry she'd take him to McDonald's. This was the beginning of a very strong bond between Laura and Maurice Maczyk, which began in the 1980s. He was homeless, and everyone in his family was a either drug addict or a drug dealer. This is a very heartwarming story with a happy ending.

Smokin' Seventeen by Janet Evanovich

3
Ok, maybe Evanovich is on the way back. I listened to this and got it from my library, so I don't have a financial investment in this book, but I'm still wondering if it's worth my time to continue to listen to this series. I'm equating this to how many times can I listen to the same joke told and still think that it's funny?

Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett

5
I had misgivings when I first decided to read this book. I didn't think it would be anything that I would like. Much to my surprise, I was hooked within the first few pages. I have gotten over half way into this book & am loving it. I can't wait to find out what is going to happen. I wish that I didn't have work & other commitments that I could just sit & read. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes to read. It doesn't make a difference (I don't think) if you don't normally read this type of book. There's something for everyone in this book.

Accidental Happiness by Jean Reynolds Page

5
After her husband's unexpected death at thirty-six, Gina Melrose becomes a "live-aboard" on his boat, docked at a marina in coastal South Carolina near the home she and Ben once shared. But Gina's temporary, borrowed existence of numb survival is shattered by the sudden appearance of Ben's unpredictable ex-wife, Reese, and Reese's charming young daughter, Angel. This book takes many twists and turns and won't let you get any Christmas shopping done! I loved every page.

Reva Wamsley
Quinn by Iris Johansen

5
I loved this book. I usually wait for the paperback edition to come out before reading a book but I may not be able to wait for the paperback edition of the next book in the series. This one ended at a critical point. This book goes back & forth between the past, when Eve first met Quinn right after Bonnie went missing, and the present, where Quinn is fighting for his life after being stabbed.

Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi

4
Rossi’s debut novel is a wonderful YA fantasy/sci-fi romance that is well-written and has an imaginative storyline. The reader is entranced by the strange future that is described and feels Aria’s struggles as their own. She is on a quest to find her place in the world; to find her inner strength; to find the truth. Intertwined in this introspective journey is a story of friendship, trust, and love. Dystopian futures are all the rage right now in the literary world, and Rossi’s novel adds new depth and imagination to the trend. "Under the Never Sky" is a new must-read for any fan of fantasy or YA fiction.

Tricia Douglas
The Face Thief by Eli Gottlieb

5
A psychological thriller bound to get you thinking AND worrying! The major characters all interact around the manipulative woman, Margot. The title refers to how often our face and body react to what is said and done to us. Can you hide what you're thinking? Do you have a "poker" face? This book is a page-turner and has a twist at the end. It will keep you wondering who's guilty and who's innocent!!!

Mary Tillotson
The Whistling Season by Ivan Doig

5
While you are reading this book you will not want the story to come to an end. It is a book not to read as fast as you can but to savor every chapter. It brings you right into a time when life was not necessarily simpler but family and relationships were the important things. Can't say enough good things about this book - thank you Ivan Doig!

The Tower, the Zoo and the Tortoise by Julia Stuart

4
A beautifully and humorously written story of the Tower of London and some of the people and menagerie of animals that inhabit it's grounds. An underlying story of searching for love and other things and dealing with loss brought tears as well as a warm glow to my heart. Whimsical and wonderful!

Sean Penrose
2nd Chance by James Patterson

4
The second installment of James Patterson’s Women’s Murder Club holds up really well. While the series title is very hokey and at times Patterson’s dialogue is as well, the plot is nice and tight. The suspense is ratcheted pretty high as each members of the club have to deal with life and death matters. While I really enjoy Lindsay Boxer the book is supposed to be about all four of the women so I would like to read more about the other three ladies. Overall, this was a good book that was a quick read but very enjoyable!

Debbie M
Come In and Cover Me by Gin Phillips

3
A very strange occurrence happened in that I read two books about archaeology. One book, Crocodile on the Sandbank, by Elizabeth Peters covers a "dig" in Egypt in the 19th century, while Come In and Cover Me centers on current times in the southwestern United States. I enjoyed both stories dealing with archaeology even though each writer utilizes different methods in writing. Peters and Phillips both employ local legend and present a ghost. Peters writes a little more whimsically and allows the reader a laugh or two. Phillips writes mystically and emotionally about a young woman who hears and sees spirits. Ren, the heroine must learn to trust and spare her feelings, and she must let go of the past. Both writers explore the trials and tribulations of archaeology.

DEATH DROPS by Chrystle Fiedler

1
The book emphasizes natural remedies and the natural-health-and-well-being way of life so much that the mystery kind of gets lost. DEATH DROPS contains more description of natural remedies and lifestyle and has just a little mystery tucked in here and there. I’m also not happy with the language used. It is so simple it seems juvenile to me. So, to be honest, I didn’t get past the halfway point. My impression is that it doesn’t get better. Fiedler is the author of two previous books, both nonfiction. Maybe she should stick with nonfiction.

Brother's Blood: A Heartland Cain and Abel by Scott Cawelti

4
This is true crime at its best. It is the story of the murder of a family --- Les Mark, Jorjean Mark, and their two small children, Jeff and Julie. This happened on a farm near Cedar Falls, Iowa in 1976. Les Mark's brother, Jerry Mark, was arrested 10 days later for the awful crime. Jerry lived in California, and investigators were able to trace his route to Iowa from there on a motorcycle. I remember when this happened, and it was fascinating to bring the arrest and conviction of the brother back to my mind.

Hope's Highway by Dorothy Garlock

4
This is my first book by Dorothy Garlock and I enjoyed it very much. In the Depression, Margie Kinnard is traveling to California with her father who she hardly knows. For years she has wanted to go to Hollywood. There are several families driving with them. Interesting to learn about each family and their relationships.

The Drop by Michael Connelly

5
#17 of the Harry Bosch series - This author gets better every time he writes another book. Several years ago I went to a book signing of Connelly’s. I remember thinking Connelly seemed uncomfortable and a bit shy when he spoke in front of the crowd. I thought about that reading this book. I read somewhere that good writers are observers; on the outside looking in. I think this is an attribute of Connelly of which makes him a great writer. His characters are complex, consistent from book to book. In this book, Bosch is part of the cold case department. A discovery is made on an old case that doesn’t make any sense and Bosch is up to the challenge. At the same time, an advisory has asked for Bosch’s help in determining how his son died. Inner turmoil is a trait Bosch struggles with every day. He is always torn between towing the line of justice and letting the chips fall and letting fate take over. This book was action packed and hard to put down. I couldn’t wait to get back to it and now I’m sad it’s over. Every time I read a Michael Connelly, I am always reminded as to why he is one of my favorite authors.

The Christmas Box by Richard Paul Evans

4
I read this in 2009. Since I decided to read The Timepiece, I thought I better refresh my memory. Glad I did. I didn’t remember a thing about it. I actually liked it better than the 1st time I read it. It’s a beautiful story of a young family who become caretakers of an elderly woman who teaches them the true meaning of Christmas. The first gift of Christmas is the love a parent has for a child. In relation to the true story of Christmas, God gave his only son for the sake of our sins. I’ve been trying to get into the spirit of Christmas. We have been very busy and I haven’t finished preparing for the holidays. Sometimes when that happens, I lose the holiday mood. Reading this story put me back on track. Looking forward to the next one by Evans.

This was a terrific book and a quick read. I didn't give it 5 stars because I would only give that rating to what I deem to be literary masterpieces, but this book was totally engaging, and I highly recommend it. It was a legal thriller mixed with holocaust tragedy and history. It had very touching moments as well. It was a plot-driven novel, not a book where individual sentences and descriptions take your breath away, but I do think it's a book that would appeal to most readers and leave them feeling their time was well spent when finished.

V is For Vengence by Sue Grafton

I started this series when "D is for Deadbeat" first came out so for 20 years at least. Kinsey has never disappointed and she doesn't on this one. When she helps arrest a shoplifter in the lingerie department, she uncovers a criminal scheme bigger than she ever imagined.

The Werwolf on Eagle's Nest Mountain by Susan Hira and Ken Marini

The book was an easy read. The action started right away and kept going until the end with bits of humor sprinkled around. I appreciated that the book had plot twists I didn't see coming and learned quite a bit about World War 2 history and snowboarding. Overall, a solid read and one I'm going to recommend to my friends.

The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley

This is the first novel of a series written by a 70 year-old-man. The series centers on a precocious eleven-year-old girl living in the 1950's in an English country manor with her father and two sisters. Flavia de Luce breathes chemistry and has her own laboratory to perform experiments. When a strange man dies minutes after Flavia finds him in her family's garden, Flavia must solve the mystery. Flavia introduces us to the leading music, books, and culture of the time. She also supplies a heavy dosage of chemistry. But, in spite of all her knowledge and expertise, Flavia is still an eleven-year-old girl who does not understand her sister's warning about knocking a man between his Casanovas. The little touches such as these expose Flavia as an inexperienced and naive young girl. Bradley does an excellent job with the setting and characters. The account of the magic performed by the three boys gives a pleasant sideshow. The book reminds me of the Mary Russell series by Laurie R King, but I adore Bradley's writing and find King a trifle boring. I am looking forward to reading more of the series.

The Cat, The Quilt, and the Corpse by Leann Sweeney

3
An entertaining read for those interested in quilting, cats, and mysteries. Leann Sweeney must have cats of her own because she writes such interesting descriptions of their behavior.

This is a beautifully written novel that bridges the cultures of the US and Korea. The characters are well-developed so that you care about them and the story flows and makes you want to turn the pages.

The Night Strangers by Chris Bohjalian

This was a different book for Bohjalian. There were a lot of different activities going on in this book. Most of them were finished, but a few were left unfinished. It also had a few suspenseful and spooky parts. Overall, it is a book I would recommend to others.

This is an exciting account of the bombing of Pearl Harbor on 12/7/1941. Since this year marked the 70th anniversary of the bombing, I thought it was a good time to read this book, remember and reflect. Highly recommend it.
