Long Gone: A Novel by Alafair Burke

5
Excellent suspense novel. The ending is unexpected and made for an excellent read. I would recommend this book to anyone. Loved it!!!

O. Newton
Doppelganger Experiment by Margaret Millmore

4
This was a great read by a new author (I read Kindle, but it seems to be available at most on-line retailers). Suspenseful, nice twist at the end, loved the main character's positive personality and drive, takes you on a psychological journey, has a nice paranormal twist, oh and its in my favorite city: San Francisco. The author knows it well!

Justin C.
Little Nuggets of Wisdom: Big Advice from the Small Star of Chelsea Lately by Chuy Bravo

4
Short and silly with no nonsense. This isn't an autobiography?

Kay
The American Heiress: A Novel by Daisy Goodwin

3
I knew I'd like this book because it's set in the Guilded Age. I was surprised and pleased to find it several steps above a romance novel. It's a good read for all you Anglophiles.

Linda B.
The Death Of Heroes (Infinity: Prime) by Saje Williams

5
Saje Williams pens a totally unbelievable yet awesome story about a team of misfit KOA agents that go back in time to prevent a war that someone or something was hell-bent on starting. As they seek a place to stay, a shadowy figure is watching them. The team appears to be over their heads when Valiant unintentionally lands in The Nightly News when she stops at a grocer for a six pack............

Maureen H.
Dead To The World: A Sookie Stackhouse Novel by Charlaine Harris

5
This is book 4 in the Sookie Stackhouse series. I really like this series. It is just pure, sheer fun. I am looking forward to reading more in this series.

Maureen H.
The Next Best Thing by Kristan Higgins

5
Great read!! I really enjoy Kristan's style of writing; it is very light and funny. She is a great comfort read for me.

Russell B.
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

4
Awesome read.

Pam S.
Lassiter by Paul Levine

5
Lassiter, our old friend in Miami, is growing up, owning up to past mistakes, and finding his deeper moral center. As a native of Miami I have always enjoyed the Lassiter series, as I am able to envision each scene. For a sweet read I highly recommend Paul's Lassiter; not only his latest, but all of them! Happy reading!

Hripsime A.
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

4
Amazing book.

Bonnie G.
The Stories of John Cheever by John Cheever

4
Maybe 4 1/2 stars. Cheever won the Pulitzer Prize for this collection and rightly so. They're short stories of a specific time and place, but the sentiments are universal and so beautifully rendered that some take your breath away.

Tanya B.
The Bride's House by Sandra Dallas

4
4.5 stars on this book about three generations of women and the house they loved. I really enjoyed and highly recommend this book.

Judy O.
These Things Hidden by Heather Gudenkauf

3
Teenager Allison Glenn was sent to prison for 5 years for drowning her new-born baby in the river. She is now back in her home town on parole, and many questions about the whole matter remain. When Allison gets a job working at a bookstore, she is immediately sure that the 5-year old boy who has been adopted by the owner is her son. Events come together in a climax that is a little too coincidental for my tastes. It was a good read, nevertheless.

Debbie M.
The Last Precinct by Patricia Cornwell

3
Patricia Cornwell delves into a story, and leaves no stone uncovered. In this installment, Kay Scarpetta deals with the lingering paranoia from the attack by Jean-Baptiste Chandonne. A New York attorney, Jaime Berger, ties Chandonne with a brutal murder in New York. Just when Kay thinks she may rebuild her life, a grand jury investigates Kay's involvement into the death of Diane Bray, believing that Kay committed the murder. As with many of Cornwell's novels, The Last Precint is set during the Christmas season when Virginia is covered with snow and bad weather. Kay must fight for her professional integrity and sanity in this chilling story. More people are killed and the trail leads to Chandonne and his family, and Kay must decide who is friend and who is foe. An interesting study in the secrets that each person carries.

Stacey C.
Cross Currents by John Shors

5
I rarely do this as I'm not a fast reader, but I started reading Cross Currents last night and finished it this afternoon. I fell in love with the characters, with the setting, and with the way that the author writes. This is a novel about the tsunami of 2004, but really it's a novel about a wide cast of wonderful characters, who ultimately face the greatest challenge of their lives. This book is really, really moving and beautiful.

Art H.
Greenmantle by John Buchan

5
A fascinating tale of high adventure centered on Richard Hannay, the hero of The Thirty-Nine Steps, as a British secret agent in the Middle East during World War I. So well-written that the occasional hard-to-believe, fortuitous events which allow Hannay to carry on are readily forgiven.

Fran
Bond Girl by Erin Duffy

5
In her hilarious, endearing style, Erin Duffy tells the tale of a young woman who is trying to make it on Wall Street. Reduced to running errands, picking up dozens of pizzas (in six inch stiletto's) and enduring the nickname, "Girlie" our main character must fight to overcome a sexist, male dominated world and prove herself. This book depicts the financial crisis of 2008 and gives the reader a birds-eye view into how the crisis was experienced by those closest to it. Great characters, cute story and an endearing heroine who will have you cheering for her all the way through this story.

Nancy L.
10th Anniversary by James Patterson

5
Another great Woman's Murder Club book by Patterson. These are about the only ones he writes that I read.

Susan J.
Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh

5
Wonderful read. I have recommended it several times. Not only is my book club reading it, but also I have two different cousin's who are in book clubs that are reading it as well.

Sharon S.
Forever Odd by Dean Koontz

5
My son has discovered the Odd novels and insists I read them. He lives in Texas; I am in Alaska. He raves about them on Facebook. He just finished the 3rd book; I am nearly finished with Book 2.

Matkeltri
Succubus Revealed by Richelle Mead

5
This the final book in my favorite paranormal romance series. I love the main character, Georgina Kincaid, who sold her soul to Hell and became a succubus to atone for a sin committed centuries ago (cheating on her husband when she was mortal). I'm only five chapters in, but I can't wait to see how the story's going to turn out. I love the relationships between the characters, and I'll miss them.

Michelle P.
Rules of Civility by Amor Towles

5
Great read. Couldn't put it down. I felt as though I had gone back in time and I really enjoyed the characters.

Laura H.
Miss Darcy Falls in Love by Sharon Lathan

5
It's a really good historical romance.

Lynn D.
Secondhand Spirits: A Witchcraft Mystery by Juliet Blackwell

4
I'm enjoying this book so much that I ordered the 2nd in the series!

Lynn D.
Night of the Living Dead (A Haunted Guesthouse Mystery) by EJ Copperman

5
I thoroughly enjoyed this charming, entertaining story! I fell in love with the characters --- especially the opinated little girl --- and the two ghosts thoroughly made me chuckle, laugh and enjoy myself even more. Alison doesn't have a chance! Am eagerly awaiting the next book in this series! Was a Great COMFORT read!!!

Gayle L.
Please Look After Mom by Kyung-Sook Shin

5
One of the best books I've ever read. A Korean mother gets separated from her husband at a subway station and by time he realizes it and returns for her, she has disappeared. As her family searches for her, we get a look into her life and the ways she sacrificed for her family, things she did to enrich her own life about which her family had no knowledge, and why she loved one child more than the others. It may give you a wake-up call and you'll never see your mother the same again.

Myrna L.
Second Nature: A Love Story by Jacquelyn Mitchard

4
Set in the very near future, Second Nature describes the impact on a young woman, terribly disfigured from a burn as a child, of a face transplant. She has a new look, a new identity but is she still thesame person? Wonderfully and provocatively written.

Allison G.
A Ticket to Ride by Paula McLain

3
Great family story.

Rena T.
Ballad of Tom Dooley by Sharyn McCrumb

4
I'm reading it now, so this is an incomplete review. McCrumb creates a remarkable voice and gives you a great a sense of the period (the Reconstruction era in the South).

Maxine U.
Radio Shangri-la by Lisa Napoli

3
I've had a busy couple of weeks so I've been reading it in bits and pieces, but so far so good. I usually read a book in a couple of days.

Mary R.
Poisoned Tarts by G.A. McKevett

4
Another great Savannah Reid mystery.

Saundra M.
The Confession by John Grisham

4
I am only half-way through the book, but it is great. Hard to put down, and I love those kind of books.

Sonja T.
Boca Nights by Steven M. Forman

5
A great mix of comedic writing and mystery.

Lorraine J
Live To Tell by Lisa Gardner

5
I could not put this book down. I read chapter 2 on my break at work and OMG!!

Joyce S.
Dreams of Joy by Lisa See

4
A great read, and sequel to Shanghai Girls. The characters are wonderful and you really get involved in their lives.

Sandy M.
Statue of Limitations by Tamar Myers

3
This book was mildly entertaining; I finished it just so I could find out who really murdered the owner of a local bed and breakfast. I must say I didn't guess it, but this book was really hard for me to plug through. Wish I could have given it a higher rating than 3.

Janice H.
Mudbound by Hillary Jordan

4
I had high expectations for this book, and it did not disappoint. Mudbound, the story of two families, one white, one black, in rural Mississippi just after WWII, is written in beautiful prose. While the central and most dramatic theme is the racism, fear, and hatred of that time, there are also many other elements to the book: the interdependence of the two families; the effects of war on returning soldiers, both black and white; the changing intricacies and intimacies of a marriage. The story is told in the voices of six different characters, which was well suited to the audio version which had six very talented narrators.

Teresa
Best Kept Secret by Amy Hatvany

4
This book presents scary thoughts about how easy it could be to step over the line with your drinking, especially when things are challenging as a mom.

Sue L.
Save Me by Lisa Scottoline

3
Just finished "Save Me" by Lisa Scottoline and found it to be very different from what I expected. The book is about saving lives, but it is also a "whodunit." I don't feel this is the author's best work.

Andrea
The Winner by David Baldacci

4
I'm really liking this book about a girl with a young daughter set up to win the lottery. I find a lot of myself in the main character, and she is tough!

Vickie D.
You've Been Warned by James Patterson & Howard Roughan

3
This book is pretty good. It's a fast read --- I am about half-way through. This is one of the better books that James Patterson has written lately

Kathy V.
Welcome To Last Chance by Hope Ramsay

4
Not the sort of book I normally read, but I like to try something different every once and a while. This book tells the story of a young woman running away from her past, who runs into a town called Last Chance, and a man named Clay who is looking for a wife. Will they make a match or does her past catch up to her?

Jean L.
The Bourne Dominion by Eric Van Lustbader

3
Having heard so much about this spy series, I was hoping I would like it enough to read the whole series. However, I was very disappointed. Perhaps I would have been more impressed if I had read some of the earlier books in the series, but I think that I will strike this author off my "authors to read" list.

Suzette S.
Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks

4
I love this book! It's not your typical love story; it has many different flavors that suit the story very well. It's both mysterious and mature. I recommend it to any adult reader out there!

Carol P.
Secret Daughter by Shilpi Somaya Gowda

5
Fascinating book that not only tells a great story, but also educates the reader about India and its customs.

L. Rischoni
A Simple Act of Violence by R.J. Ellory

5
This is a 5 star book! I could not put it down! Very intelligent author who must have done considerable research. It has everything: mystery, tension, mysterious government dealings, and love stories. It is about 500 pages long, and even on the last few pages I was still getting surprises and jaw dropping moments. The story stays with you after you finish the book.

KG
The Soldier's Wife by Margaret Leroy

5
I read this book twice --- once several months ago, and then more recently for my book club. I could not put it down either time. The descriptions of Guernsey in the Channel Isles were so picturesque, that I have researched it and plan to visit there on vacation. I thought the story was sad --- a very sad love story that took place on the island before, during and after World War 2. It had so many twists and turns! I loved reading it!

Muriel L.
The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh

5
This book grabbed my interest from the beginning. I'm only part way through with it and can hardly put it down. From her rough life in foster homes to her meeting with the florist Renata, Victoria Jones has an interesting life, with many secrets to be unlocked. Through Renatta, Victoria realizes she has a gift for helping others through the flowers she chooses for them. I highly recommend the book.

Judy L.
The Poisoner’s Handbook: Murder and the Birth of Forensic Medicine in Jazz Age New York by Deborah Blum

5
A fascinating history of the creation of the New York City Medical Examiner's Office. Take a little poison, add case studies and prohibition, and you have a very readable yet informative book. CSI would not exist if it weren't for men like Charles Norris and Alexander Gettler.

Judy B.
The Indian Bride by Karin Fossum

5
I like this book!!! About half way through there is a clue and you think "Aha! I know who did it!," but then all of these other clues appear and you think "I'm wrong! He couldn't possibly have done it!" And then you are really hooked reading to the very end to see who really did it!

Terry P.
Be Now, Buddy What by Dan Spencer

4
Have just started reading this book and so far it's a must read. Catches you from page one; I can't wait to see what happens.

Judy B.
The Old Patagonian Express: By Train Through the Americas by Paul Theroux

3
The first part of the book was not interesting; the second half was more so, but I was disappointed with the book as a whole. There wasn't much interaction between Mr. Theroux and the people at the train stops. He seemed to always be reading!

Mary Ann K.
Mile 81 by Stephen King

5
Cant say much because it is so very short, but this book is purely Steven King! I wish it were longer, but it really didn't need to be. I will remember it for quite a while, as I now know he can really come to the point.

Susan B.
Purity in Death by J.D.Robb

5
I just started reading the books in Robb's Death Series. Very entertaining!

Lori B.
The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein

5
Wonderful book so far. How interesting to be reading a book through the perspective of a dog! Very touching story. Although I have been fortunate to have dogs as a part of my life, you do not have to love dogs to enjoy this book. It's a good story, so read it if you can!

Rosemary S.
Robert B. Parker's Killing the Blues by Michael Brandman

3
Nice try at keeping Parker's style alive, but not quite good enough.

Gail S.
Heart Of The Matter by Emily Giffin

5
I rate this book with 5 stars. It tells the story of two Boston women and how their lives intermingle when the son of one is involved in a tragic accident. Their thoughts on life and love are tested and each comes to find what is really important in life.

Sally G.
The Next Best Thing on My List by Jill Smolinski

4
Guilt and remorse compel a woman to do something she would not have done in different circumstances.

Angie F.
Master of the Game by Sidney Sheldon

5
This is the first novel I have read that REALLY got me hooked on reading. Sidney Sheldon is an amazing author and I have read all the books he has ever written (with the exeption of the books by Tilly Bagshawe). Most of the books I have read several times, in fact. I even got my sister hooked on his books as well. I would recommend his books to everyone. Unfortunately Sheldon passed away over 4 years ago so he will not be writing any more books. Tilly Bagshawe is now writting under Sidney Sheldon's name. I do plan to read AFTER THE DARKNESS but I am not sure it will be the same.

Angie
Dear John by Nicholas Sparks

5
I really loved this book and I think the ending was way more romantic in the book than in the movie. Shows what one person is willing to give up for true love.

KG
Cocktails for Three by Madeleine Wickham

4
Humorous story of three women who work for a high-fashion magazine in London. They meet at a cocktail bar on a regular basis where one night, an event occurs that triggers a series of unexpected thrills. A funny, at times serious, and enjoyable read!

Angie
Room by Emma Donoghue

5
I was all prepared to hate this book. I was so wrong; I loved it. It is narrated by a five year old which I thought would be very silly. Instead, the author managed to capture a realistic and innocent child's voice without churning out a book that's overly simplistic or too calculated. I would and highly recommended this book to everyone.

Carol G.
BEYOND BLACK by Hilary Mantel

5
An interesting novel involving the living world, the other side, and those that bring it all together. Funny in spots and disgusting when describing the horrible things men can do to children, and the way some people have to make a living. Her novels are so different from one another, and I love her writing style.

Christine H.
The Rembrandt Affair by Daniel Silva

4
This historical mystery was fast-paced and entertaining. The art world was elucidated.

Donna P.
The Memory Palace by Mira Bartok

5
True story about young sisters with a schizophrenic mother. They face many hardships and difficulties, finally distancing themselves from her in order to survive. I have a mentally ill sister and this book was right on the mark. I also enjoyed the author's artwork and survival story from brain injury. All in all, this book was heart wrenching yet touched w/humor and inspiration as well.

Ann
Flashback by Dan Simmons

4
Not quite half-way through, and it is a exciting, action-packed book. Can't wait to get to the end to find out what happens.

Helen W.
Lost in Shangri-La by Mitchell Zuckoff

5
A true story from WWII that takes place in New Guinea in 1945. A plane crash and the incredible story of the three survivors and their amazing rescue. You have to read this to believe it. Well- written with many pictures and huge references. What an excellent read.

Betty C.
The Tenderness of Wolves by Stef Penney

4
A very bleak murder mystery set in the wilds of Canada in the 1880s.

Linda S.
The Help by Kathryn Stockett

5
A great, can't-put-it-down book!

Pattie B.
Robert Redford: The Biography by Michael Feeney Callan

2
I was interested in his domestic life, but the book was mostly about his films. It led me to believe he was an absent father.

Reva W.
First Family by David Baldacci

5
I could barely stop reading once I started. I stayed up late two nights in a row reading this book. The First Lady's niece is kidnapped and she asks a P.I. friend of hers to try to find her. The book goes back and forth between the First Lady and her friend, and the kidnapper. I was racking my brain trying to figure out why, up until the very end when everything was revealed. One of the best books I've read in a long time.

Art H.
The Man From Beijing by Henning Mankell

4
After bidding farewell to Kurt Wallander (alas) Henning Mankell turns to a female protagonist --- well, actually, to two strong women and a male villain, as well as his murderous hireling, also male. The narrative takes place in different continents and covers different centuries. The reader can follow the story easily enough, but can less-easily find plausible elements of the plot --- for example, a sudden trip from Sweden to Beijing that proves vital to the resolution of the story; or why a clue of forever-puzzling significance was deposited in a Chinese restaurant not far from the Swedish murder scene.

Eileen K.
Girl in Translation by Jean Kwok

5
This is a great story about a woman who doesn't belong to the dominant culture. She and her Mother work in a sweatshop in Brooklyn. Kimberly, the daughter, goes to school during the day and does an outstanding job; she works in the sweatshop at night and does an outstanding job. It is a double-life filled with many hardships, but also hope and survival.

E. Whatley
Let Sleeping Dogs Lie by Tami Kidd

3
The mystery that runs through the book is "the letter." As the lead character searches for answers about "the letter," she teams up with a private investigator, and, predictably, romance ensues as they continue the search together. The ending was not predictable and begs for a sequel. Light, easy, quick read. It had a little too much romance for my personal taste but if you like your mysteries that way, this may be a book for you.

Debra
Secrets to Seducing a Scot by MIchelle Marcos

4
Michelle Marcos’s SECRETS TO SEDUCING A SCOT is a delight from beginning to end, as history is experienced, love is found and, at least for the two lovers, some wrongs are righted. Pick up SECRETS TO SEDUCING A SCOT and enjoy the journey with our guide Michelle Marcos.

Tasha W.
The Coal Tattoo by Silas House

4
I absolutly love this book. The way House describes Kentucky makes you feel like you are there with the characters.

Crystal B.
Chasing Darkness: An Elvis Cole Novel by Robert Crais

5
A suspense-filled mystery featuring L.A. private investigator Elvis Cole with help from his buddy Joe Pike. Although Cole and Pike have been featured in previous Crais novels, this is the first one I've read. And now I can't wait to read more!

Ray O.
The Saturated Self: Dilemmas of Identity in Contemporary Life by Kenneth J. Gergen

5
You can find a copy of the book either electronically at google.com, or at amazon.com. Both have a free sample and/or a few excerpts.

Kay W.
Escape by Barbara Delinsky

3
Barbara Delinsky does not disappoint. ESCAPE is an easy read, but it leaves you with plenty to contemplate.

Judy O.
Until Tuesday: A Wounded Warrior and the Golden Retriever Who Saved Him by Luis Carlos Montalvan w/ Bret Witter

4
The author came home from two stints in Iraq with serious physical and mental wounds. He eventually receives a Golden Retriever service dog named Tuesday. This is the true story of their life together. It's just heartwarming to learn about all that this dog did for Montalvan, both emotionally and physically. The author, in turn, did wonders for Tuesday, who had had his own problems before he met Luis. This is a fast read, but so compelling. Keep your tissues handy.

Cary C.
Be Different: Adventures of a Free-Range Asbergian by John Elder Robison

5
A wonderfully wise book for anyone who has, or knows someone with, Aspergers, as well as those of us who are just different.

Debbie E.
The Language of Flowers by Vanesssa Diffenbaugh

5
A totally new story-line --- "Foster Child Makes Good." It's an amazing tale of a girl who came up through the foster care system and is kicked out at age 18 with no place to go. She is torn emotionally, can't trust anyone, and can't let anyone get close to her for she knows she will only get hurt again. Step by step she begins to heal

Marilyn
Only Yours by Susan Mallery

5
There are absolutely no words that can express how incredibly fabulous ONLY YOURS was to read. Susan Mallery has written a real "hit" with this September release which showcased the second Hendrix triplet, Montana. Fools Gold, Cailforna is a town everyone would want to move to as the residents not only love their town, but also love and support each other. I knew this book would be a winner and it was. It scored #7 on the New York Times Best Selling list. I've read the entire series and recently ONLY MINE, and loved it. However, this one I adored because it was so intense regarding the heroine Montana Hendrix and a man who touched her soul: plastic surgeon Simon Bradley. Their chemistry rocked the seismic charts! The secondary characters are also incredible. With them, Susan Mallery whets your appetite for more books in this wonderful series. Some of the Fools Gold residents, like the Hendrix family, were introduced to readers in earlier books, and they only enhance the story. New characters and secrets are also revealed. So many warm and wonderful town residents! Nevada Hendrix's story will be the next, in ONLY HIS. If you're a fan of Susan Mallery's and have read her interviews, you know it will be about the return of a man from her past, a "first love" story; I can't wait! Only Yours, is a stand alone book. However, I encourage you to read all of the Fools Gold series. You won't be disappointed. To say more about this lovely book would ruin your reading experience, so I hope you'll trust me, Only Yours had me laughing, crying and in the end sighing because Susan Mallery always gives her readers a happy ending. However, sometimes to get there, the journey can be painful. In Montana's and Simon's case painful doesn't even begin describe it!

Betrayal by Fern Michaels

5
This is one GOOD read. It's about time we saw old F.M. again; after THE SISTERHOOD we needed this. No one will be disappointed.

Jenel L.
Only His by Susan Mallery

5
I got a sneak peek at ONLY HIS by Susan Mallery and O.M.G!!!! It is sooo funny!!! I think it might be the funniest thing that Mallery has ever written.

Nicole A.
The Red Tent by Anita Diamant

5
I've read this a few times now and love it still. It's an interesting take on history during the time of the bible, told from a woman's perspective.

Eyes Wide Open by Andrew Gross

4
This is the first book I have read by Andrew Gross and I was impressed. Andrew has a way of introducing the characters that makes you feel like you can reach out and touch them in real life!! Knowing that this story is based on a true event in the author's life made it even more interesting!! So if you like psychological thrillers, you will want to pick up this book right away!!

Jackie R.
Back to the Bedroom by Janet Evanovich

3
So far enjoying it. Only a couple of chapters in, but I usually love her romance novels.

Pamel W.
Payback by Fern Michaels

5
Seven women and one man, Charles, form what is called "The Sisterhood." The Sisterhood is out for revenge on the wrongs that have been done to each of them. In this book, Senator Mitchell Webster is a philanderer and has given his wife, Dr. Julia Webster, AIDS as a result of his extra-marital affairs. Julia has not told her husband that he has AIDS. Then he is named as running-mate for the Presidental election.... The Sisterhood will also be getting revenge on an HMO who has reaped millions by denying their patients much-needed treatment, sometimes resulting in death. This is the only book about The Sisterhood. If you have ever wished you could get payback for something done to you, this is a perfect book.

Sandra F.
Haunted by Kelley Armstrong

4
This Canadian writer of paranormal fiction is the best in the genre. This book deals with Eve, a dead witch in search of a Nix. A very good read.

Kellie
Sliver of Truth by Lisa Unger

5
This series has really caught my attention. The series is about Ridley Jones, a journalist living in New York City, who has discovered some interesting things about her family. The first book, BEAUTIFUL LIES, sets everything up. This book picks up where the first one leaves off. There is a lot of suspense and action. What sets this series apart from others is the style of writing. The author has a unique way with words. The author has a plethora of thoughtful things to say like “an awareness of your own worth is the most attractive quality in the world,” or “If you do things to cheapen yourself men will think they can have you cheaply and then discard you,” to point out a few. She also speaks to the reader directly as she is telling the story. This might be annoying to some but I kind of like it. This book had me on the edge of my seat almost through the whole thing. It has to be one of the best mystery series I’ve read. I can’t wait to read the next one.

Ivy P.
The Seasons of Beento Blackbird by Akosua Busia

5
Busia writes like an angel on a mission. This was an exceptionally well-told story about Solomon, who lives in three worlds with three different women.

Cheryl K.
POX: An American History by Michael Willrich

5
I love history and medicine, so when the two are combined the result is a great book for me. Smallpox was used as a biological weapon as early as the Indian wars and the Civil War. The eradication of this disease took time and determination. The book brings up the discussion of personal liberties and the right not to have the vaccination. Public health started to become a way to monitor and measure the health of commuities and to prevent epidemics, and later pandemics. I found it an easy read, filled with the pros and cons of what we see today with vaccinations.

ck
Alice I Have Been by Melanie Benjamin

4
I listened to Samantha Eggers read ALICE. It was so scary that I turned it off occasionally. Lewis Carroll lived in Oxford near the Liddell family, and took them on outings like boating trips. He photographed Alice and her sisters but particularly liked having Alice pose, drawing her and telling her stories which she encouraged him to write. It sounds so innocent... Benjamin combines English history and the life of a child who, of course, did not stay seven but grew into a woman. The novel promises to provide a lively book discussion. I am reading an annotated ALICE IN WONDERLAND and THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS as I prepare.

Diane M.
The Heart Mender by Andy Andrews

This book has everything --- history, a good story, and a moral lesson.

Mary Beth P.

Gone to Green by Judy Pace Christie

5
Reading this book, I feel like I learned how a newspaper business operates. Living in a small town myself, I could so relate to the community. Lois Barker takes over a newspaper willed to her by her friend who worked with her in a big city. In this story, you can see God's plan unfold in circumstance after circumstance. Lois did not want to stay in Green, LA more than a year, but she soon found herself very involved in the community. So when she found a buyer for her house she could not sell. In this book you can really see how one person's life can make a big difference in the life of a town and other people too. Be advised: this is a book you won't be able to lay down. I cannot wait to read another book by this author.

Zeitoun by Dave Eggers

2
Not very interesting. A lot of religious quotes. The book takes place before, during and after hurricane Katrina; it is non-fiction. Our book club is reading it now and I haven't heard anything good! Seems to be quite a bit of Muslim racial profiling.

Still reading, so I do not know how it will end. Can't wait to finish it.

The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake by Aimee Bender

3
A young girl who discovers that she can "taste" the emotions of others in the foods they prepare. This book was very unusual but I found the tasting aspect of it fascinating. What would normally be a depressing topic --- a dysfunctional family --- was lightened somewhat by the sense of hope at the end.

Michelle A.
Next To Love by Ellen Feldman

4
A lovely book about the repercussions of war, not only on the participants but also on those they leave behind. The book follows three young war brides as they wait for the return of their soldiers, and handles how they deal with their return or deaths and how it effects the remainder of their lives and those of their children. Very well written!

Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience and Redemption by Laura Hillenbrand

5
This book is so engrossing I can't put it down. It is the story of Louis Zamperini, a U. S. Olympic track star who is captured during World War II, and his ordeal as a prisoner. It is really the story of the human spirit and its strength in the face of hell itself.

The Autobiography of Mrs. Tom Thumb by Melanie Benjamin

4
I was caught up in this book from the first page. It is a very well-written book about Vinnie Bump who was destined to become Mrs. Tom Thumb. From the time she was a little girl she dreamed of leaving home and becoming famous. She may have been a miniature lady, but she had big dreams and the courage to make them come true.

Only His by Susan Mallery

5
This is book six in Susan Mallery's "Fools Gold" series, and book three in the Hendrix triplets trilogy. This book had me laughing out loud time and again, and sighing with Susan Mallery's masterful way of telling a love story. Great read!

One Summer by David Balducci

5
This is the first book I have read by David Balducci and I would definitely read more. The story moved very quickly and I was thoroughly entertained. Being a female, I would certainly want to be married a wonderful husband like Jack, who so mourns his late wife and loves his children. His wife Lizzie is very dedicated; she takes care of her sick husband for such a long time. I highly recommend this book. I do believe in miracles so this story was right up my alley.

The Neighbor by Lisa Gardner

Author certainly makes you think about your neighbors...and who's watching you. It's not to gruesome or gory, just a good read that keeps you thinking.

The Ballad of Tom Dooley by Sharyn McCrumb

4
An Appalachian ballad offering a mix of true crime and "what could have happened." The book was chilling because the event is true. It was difficult to read about the hanging of Tom Dula and know that, in all probability, he was innocent of murder.

Cross Currents by John Shors

5
I read about Cross Currents in National Geographic and was prompted to go out and buy the book. I'm so glad that I did. It's a wonderful novel about two families living in paradise in the days leading up to the tsunami of six or seven years ago. I'm sharing this book with my friends and family members, which I don't often do. It's stunning.

Something Red by Jennifer Gilmore

This book had an interesting story-line, but it was just toooo wordy. I eventually speed read it. The 60's to 70's interplay was good though the ending was not too surprising as it followed the theme of the book.

The Hour I First Believed by Wally Lamb

5
4.5 stars. This is an epic novel dealing with everything from the Columbine HS shooting, to women's prison reform, to slavery and the Civil War. The author does a fine job (not great - hence the 4.5 stars) in transitioning from one topic to the next. I listened to the audiobook which consisted of 20 CDs, read by George Guidall (superb reader - he gets 6 stars!).

Before I Go to Sleep by S.J. Watson

5
This was quite the thriller about a woman who had had a case of amnesia for over 20 years. She starts to see a doctor secretly, against her husband's advice, because she starts to have flashes of what she thinks are memories. Her husband does not think it will do her any good to see the docotr, so she hides the fact from him. I was very surprised and taken by this book; I liked it so much that I finished it within 24 hours.

Diane C.
Caring for Eleanor by Sonia Rumzi

5
A wonderful book that gives us a look into a subject that most don't like to talk about: domestic abuse. This story is about the abuse that one woman takes for many years because she feels that she cannot walk away from her children. That is, until she meets someone who helps her to understand that she can walk away and take care of herself and her children. Beautifully told. Everyone should take the time to read this story.

Sweet Like Sugar by Wayne Hoffman

Excellent book! Something a little different and something that you would probably not pick up without a recommendation. This is a story of relationships; it is more than just a religious story about Judaism.

Constance
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

5
Not only a great Young Adult read, but also a wonderful book in general! Katniss is such a strong female character; much better as a young woman's role model than Bella from TWILIGHT. There is something for everyone in this book: action, drama, suspense, and even romance. But the meat of this book is about a 16 year old girl living in a future "utopian" North America, who takes her sister's role in THE HUNGER GAMES, a fight to the death against 23 other children and teens. The lone survivor wins. I missed my train stop when I got to the end --- I was so engrossed! Can't to read the other two books in the series!

Only Time Will Tell by Jeffrey Archer

5
This is the first novel by Jeffrey Archer I have read. What an amazing storyteller! Sections were divided and told by different characters; the transitions were smooth though, because the story was told from one character to the next, leaving little twists along the way. I loved the time periods, and watching Harry grow. I am sad that I have to wait for the next in the series! I cannot wait to see where the story goes next!! I just really connected with the characters and loved the multigenerational story!

Rum Punch by Elmore Leonard

2
I have heard so much about Elmore Leonard and how I would love his works. I have had a couple of his books sitting on my shelf for quite a while, and now that I finally got around to reading this I am a little unclear as to where the large-scale appeal comes from. The plot here is pretty basic and I was waiting for something unique or unpredictable, but nothing happened. My biggest problems were the dialogue and the structure of the book. Many, many times it was difficult to keep track of conversations: who was talking and what they were talking about. Overall, this is something that I would have been fine skipping.

Pigeon English by Stephen Kelman

5
Wow...what to say? The ending really got me. I just fell in love with this little boy. This story is told through Harri's voice, an 11yr old who recently emigrated from Ghana to the housing projects of London. He and his friend then decide to investigate a murder. But this story is so much more than their investigation. Harri's innocence about the threats around him touched my heart. I found the view of inner-city life very touching. I laughed at some points, and found other parts so very sad. I do have to say though, I did not see the relevence of the pigeon. "Mamma says giving up is a sin. It's the same as lying. It's even worse than that because it's lying to yourself."

Still Alice by Lisa Genova

5
I really enjoyed STILL ALICE, which I just finished. I'm looking forward to presenting information on Lisa Genova and Early Onset Alzheimer's for my bookclub. As a gerontology student I loved how the author helps you understand the gradual changes in Early Onset Alzheimer's. I've learned so much on how to work with family members and caregivers, but very little about how a person with Early Onset Alzheimer's disease would feel. Alice helped me to understand Early Onset Alzheimer's from the patients perspective, which is very valuable!

I LOVED this book!! I laughed so hard I had tears rolling down my face at times. It's heartwarming, yet humorous. The subplots are amazing. If you've been reading Susan's "Fool's Gold" series, this last one has a lot of answers fans have been waiting for since last year.

After the mysterious deaths of two women who bear an uncanny resemblance to Dr. Kacey Lambert, detective Selena Alvarez suspects murder. Tinkers by Paul Harding

5
This novel, which deals with a dying man, his father and the father's father --- flipping back and forth from one generation to the other --- can be a difficult read. It's well worth the effort though. Harding's writing is beautifully descriptive and poetic. More than plot, the books is concerned with examining the lives of three men.

If You Ask Me (And of Course You Won’t) by Betty White

3
Doesn’t everyone adore Betty White? She is sweet, funny and down-right inspirational. I’ve been watching her for more years than I care to admit and have always enjoyed her performances. When I saw her new book on the ‘hot picks’ shelf at the library I just had to read it. This is a delightful little book that you can enjoy in an hour or two. It’s not really a memoir but I’m not sure how else to describe it. There are lots of photos accompanied by short commentaries of about 2 or 3 pages on a variety of subjects mostly covering the past 15 years. She discusses life, love, aging, her beauty secrets, her love of animals, the television industry and her new show. And that’s just a few of the many topics she touches on. As enjoyable as this was, there’s not a lot of depth to any of the chapters. It was light and breezy, reading like a magazine interview or conversation on a talk show. I would have liked a little more detail. Unless you’re a die-hard fan, read a copy from the library.

Bond Girl by Erin Duffy

5
One day when Alex Garrett was eight years old, her investment banker father took her to work with him. From that day on, Alex’s ambition was to work in “the Business” on Wall Street. When she landed her first job after college with a prestigious Wall Street trading firm, she was thrilled. Star struck, she entered the building on her first day, excited to begin. She knew she would have to work hard and work her way up the ranks of bond traders but she didn’t expect to have a tiny metal folding chair instead of a workstation and that her duties involved being the group’s golfer. Her boss, Chick, terrified her, introduced her to the team, and left to play golf. Over the weeks, Alex moved her small chair along the desks, watched the traders to learn everything she could about bond trading, and did all the menial tasks she was given. Alex’s life became one of long hours, constant stress and lots of drinking after work. She got used to the wackiness of the floor and outrageously large bets on anything, made friends, ‘hung out’ with a coworker and picked up a rich stalker. Her dream turned into a nightmare and she started reevaluating her life. BOND GIRL is a fresh, funny, honest look at Wall Street. Read it and enjoy Alex’s real education about “the Business”.

The Wolf at Twilight by Kent Nerburn

5
This story is a novelized non-fiction account of two men. Dan is a Lakota Elder who lives in South Dakota, and Kent is a white man who reconnects with Dan after helping him with an earlier problem (Neither Wolf nor Dog). Ninety-year-old Dan wants Kent to find out what happened to the Indian's sister 80 years ago. She was stolen from her family and sent to a white man's boarding school. They never heard from her again. Dan, Kent, and Grover--Dan's faithful friend--head out in Kent's car to see if they can find any traces of her disappearance. It is at times poignant and at times hilarious. This is a book strongly recommended and provided to me by a friend, and I probably would not have read it otherwise. That would have been my loss, as I really enjoyed it.

Bengali Girls Don't by L.A. Sherman and Sherry O'Donnell

4
I loved this true story of a young 16 year old Bengali girl who is forced into an arranged marriage with a man who is twice her age. I love books that depict the lives of real people in real life situations. The reader continually routes for this young girl, who endures a horrific marriage, abuse in laws and deplorable living conditions in her new home. You cry for her and cheer for her as she finds her way out and comes to live the better life she has always longed for. Loved the pictures at the end of the book!

Carmen Slaughter
Coming Up For Air by Patti Callahan Henry

4
Patti C.Henry's hardcover debut teaches us that we can never fully understand the present or prepare for the future until we truly know our past. It's the story of one woman's journey from being just a daughter/wife/mother to becoming the person she was meant to be. In the novel Ellie learns that "doing the right thing" is often the wrong way to find happiness in life. It is definitely in my top ten of 2011. The writing is heartfelt and makes you feel as if you're chatting with an old friend over your favorite bottle of wine. I have read every novel written by Patti Callahan Henry and this is officially my favorite of all her work.

Reva Wamsley
6th Target by James Patterson

4
This is a Women's Murder Club book, the 6th of the series. I'm enjoying them very much. This one starts out on a ferry when a gunman opens fire & one of the club members is shot. Meanwhile, a little girl & her nanny is kidnapped. The nanny is found dead later on.

Unbroken by by Laura Hillenbrand

4
I found the first five chapters very boring and I was ready to give up. My son told me to keep reading and I did. This book is one of the most amazing stories. I have such admiration for anyone serving in the military. It was not just a war story it is the story of one of the most amazing men in our country. If the size of the novel scares you listen to this story it is amazing.

What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty

4
This is a book that makes you think, what if you woke up and thought it was ten years past? Would you still like yourself? I found this to be a very fun and different read. There are many stories within the story. The story takes place in Australia and I enjoyed the differences in our common sayings.

Allison gardner
Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger

5
Great story -- romantic and amusing.

Victoria Marston
The Submission by Amy Waldman

5
This is a novel about the selection of the design for the Ground Zero Memorial. The story weaves the lives of individuals and the greater political, media, religious, and racial forces that evolve into tense, angry, and sometimes violent confrontations. The reader is captured by the events and the characters, and easily succumbs to confusion, anguish, cynicism, doubt, outrage, and, yes, hope that emanates from these pages. What I thought would be a contrived and shallow approach to the aftermath of 9-11, turned out to be a masterful novel and one of the best I have read this year.

A Thread of Truth by Marie Bostwick

4
This author has done it again for me. She has totally entertained me. Her writing has a warm cozy feel to it. The story centered around a quilt Shop in New Bern, Connecticut. The minor theme in this book was domestic violence and how the friends welcome a new person into their protective circle. I enjoy that this author allows the male characters to be gentlemen. Reading this book was like visiting an old friend. I look forward to reading other books written by this author.

Kellie
A Certain Slant of Light by Cynthia Thayer

4
This was a very interesting read. It is a story about a man, Peter, who lives on the northern coast of Maine. He lives alone in a small cabin. His family died in a fire. During an ice storm, a pregnant woman knocks on his door. She has a bruise on her face and she asks if she could take shelter in the cabin for a while. It turns out she is a Jehovah’s Witness. She has run away from her husband who obviously punched her in the face. So, Peter and Elaine share this cabin for what is suppose to be just a day or two, turns out to be several months. The author has a wealth of knowledge about gardening, sheep and the bagpipes. I actually learned a few things. Slowly, page by page, we learn about Peter and Elaine and why Peter is still haunted by the death of his wife and kids. Why Elaine’s husband hit her and how her religion has played a large part in her life. I wasn’t expecting to like this book this much. I am glad I read it and would be interested in reading another one by this author.

Janice Hoaglin
Undone by Karin Slaughter

4
I have only read one other book by Karin Slaughter, Blindsighted, which is the first in her first series. This book, Undone, is the first in a new series and ties together her two other series. I liked Blindsighted, but I think her writing has become much sharper, her ability to draw characters with depth and detail has greatly improved. The two main characters here are quirky, eccentric, full of their own dilemmas and struggles, and fully believable. The plot is tight , and doesn't fall apart at the end, as some seem to do. I did not know for sure who the culprit was until near the end. The violence described in this book is difficult to read, and I had to skim through some of the early scenes, but that being said, this is a great new series for me. I am trying to wait patiently for the second in the series to be available from my library, and already have the third waiting here, an unsuspected gift from the publisher!

Speaking Christian by Marcus J. Borg

5
A non-fiction book that should be required reading for all active, church-going Christians. What does the language you use when speaking of your church/beliefs mean? Does it turn others off? Do you have any idea of the historical basis for the use of a lot of the words used in church? Do they mean something different today from their original use? And why? What happened to change them?

The Ladies of Covington Send Their Love by Joan A. Medlicott

Three widows of a "certain age" find themselves living in a dreary Pennsylvania boardinghouse when one is given the gift of a house and property in North Carolina. The three set out to see it (only one has a driver's license but, frightened of driving, keeps the car at the top speed of 40 MPH), decide to rescue the dilapidated house and in the process find themselves rescued from much that has bound them throughout their adult lives.

Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford

4
Story of the interaction of the Japanese, Chinese, and caucasian Americans during WWII and the unlikely friendships as well as the likely bullying that occurred. Henry Lee is in the crowd at the long boarded up Panama Hotel when it is announced that there has been discovered a large quantity of items that belonged the the Japanese who were forcibly taken to internment camps in 1942 . He remembers his Japanese friend, Keiko, and wonders if any of her family's things are there. And what has happened to Keiko? This is a tender, yet heart-wrenching tale of individuals, families, a nation and its fears.

A very absorbing read, I found, delving into a life built on duping so many for so long.

B Rudd
The Cypress House by Michael Koryta

5
One of the best books I have read in a long time; and I read constantly. The main character reminded me of Jack Reacher in that he was strong, resillient, and yet moral. The story's elements were balanced well: action, suspence, romance. Had never tried this author, but it was recommended by a friend; and I am so glad. Devoured the book in a weekend. His writing is powerful and so descriptive, I almost felt like I was an invisible bystander in the scenes. He is now one of my top ten "must read authors".

Dominance by Will Lavender

4
This takes place at a small college where a literature professor is teaching a special night class. The novel returns 15 years later to the college and the night class members, 2 of whom have been murdered, and the professor is in jail. There is a game called "The Procedure". I'm in the middle of the book and can't put it down. An excellent psychological thriller.

Jackie Ranaldo
Hero at Large by Janet Evanovich

2
I usually like Janet Evanovich romance reads because they are cute, funny and not too raunchy. Usually I have one of her books read in just a couple of days, but I'm having a hard time getting through this one. It's nowhere near as good as WIFE FOR HIRE or THANKSGIVING. And why are her characters always redheads?

Karen Barash
The Affair by Lee Child

5
This latest book, which is actually a prequel to the Jack Reacher series, is one I couldn't put down and read in two days. The author is constantly raising the stakes with clever twists which keep you guessing to the very end. Even if you don't usually read murder mysteries, you will love this novel.

A Little Death in Dixie by Lisa Turner

3
This is a good mystery about the death of a cop gone wrong and the disappearance of a former Southern belle, Sophia. It also follows an emerging romance between Detective Billy investigating both cases and Mercy, Sophia's sister. The city of Memphis is as much of a character in the book as any one person is and the author nails the Southern feel of the place.

Rosemary Sobczak

Small Change by Sheila Roberts

2
This book is the book we're reading this month in our Second Wednesday book club. I usually love the books our leader picks and I think she was picking a light read after reading "Winter Garden" by Kristin Hannah last month. Small Change was a little on the corney side and a feel good kind of book. My favorite thing about the book is the title and how "Small Change" not only refered to saving money, but also refered to the "Small Change" our actions to save money in this day and age can make big changes in our lives.

Breaking the Silence by Diane Chamberlain

5
I stumbled onto this author and now look for her. First I read Secret Life of CeeCee Wilkes , thats one to read too. Found a couple second hand older books then this last one I read was just as good. So well written no slow drags that you just can't get through nor nonsense babble. A little girl saw her dad commit suicide, and never spoke from that moment on because when she talk people died. VERY GOOD READ --- you wouldn't know it's not a true story.

Mudbound by Hillary Jordan

I loved this book!! What a wonderfully told story! Our main characters, Henry, Laura, Jamie, Ronsel, Hap, Florence and Pappy, lives are intertwined in rural Mississippi at a farm called Mudbound. It is the Deep South in the 1940s and racism abounds, setting up a tragic chain of events. The story was told through the eyes of each character and it gripped you right from the start.

Barbara Scott-Cannon
Flash and Bones by Kathy Reichs

5
Kathy Reichs knows how to keep you turning the pages of her mysteries. Living in the Charlotte area, I am familiar with the things she describes and yet she can still surprise me! Her characters become like family and her writing style makes it feel as if you're reading letters from a friend. She creates enough twists and turns that you'r never bored and always on your toes trying to figure things out.

Rosalie Sambuco
Night Road by Kristin Hannah

Another winner for Ms Hannah. This is a story of a young girl growing up in the Northwest US. I have smiled and cried while reading this book. I highly recommend it.

The Sisters Brothers by Patrick deWitt

2
This book is a new take on the old "western" genre. It's not for the faint of heart. The brothers are hired killers who meet a wide variety of characters along their path to their latest prey. While the characters, both human and other-than-human, add a lot of interest to the book, I definitely would NOT recommend this book to my book club!

Sheilah Nocks
Girl In Translation by Jean Kwok

Once started, couldn't put it down. Many of our grandparents lived similar lives when coming to the United States years ago. They persevered and made better lives for us!

Elaine McIntosh
Maisie Dobbs by Jacqueline Winspear

5
As I understand it, they have brought the Maise Dobbs series back in print. I was delighted with the first book and can't wait to read more. The setting is England after World War 1. This is a period I knew nothing about and I enjoyed the Historical fiction aspect of this series.

Margaret
Better Off Without Him by Dee Ernst

4
I loved the fact that Mona is a forty-something year old woman with a real life and real problems to go with it. I could relate to her and found myself rooting for her in the end because who doesn't want a happy ending? I loved the zesty humor and colorful characters, particularly Aunt Lilly. I wish I had one! For a chick lit lover this is an awesome read!

The Dry Grass of August by Anna Jean Mayhew

5
This is a well written novel that takes place in the early 1950s South. It reminded me of "The Help" in many ways.

Debbie Rodgers
Henrietta's War by Joyce Dennys

5
During 1939 and 1940, Dennys wrote a series of weekly columns in the form of endearing letters purportedly written to a friend at the front in France at the beginning of WWII. From the Devon countryside, she writes of news of the home front, the refugees from London, and her family. Warm, engaging, humourous and touching. I was sorry when the book ended.

The Guide: A Novel by R.K. Narayan

The Barn by Randy Leffingwell

One Good Dog by Susan Wilson

4
Adam March, a powerful executive & millionaire has a come-apart at work and loses his job, his socialite wife and princess daughter. While performing his mandatory community service at a homeless men's shelter, his path crosses that of Chance, a pit-bull struggling to leave the fight circuit. In alternating chapters with narration of Adam’s story, Chance tells his tale in his own words, which lifts this book above standard Grisham/Steel fare.

Debbie Rodgers
The Tiger's Wife by Tea Obreht

4
Set in war-torn Yugoslavia, The Tiger's Wife follows a young doctor who, while on a mercy mission to immunize orphans, hears of the death of her beloved grandfather. Oddly enough he died in a village close by the orphanage and she retrieves his belongings, while unraveling the story of his childhood. It was then that a tiger escaped from a zoo during World War II bombings and wandered deep into the woods, settling just outside his peasant village. It terrorized the town, the devil incarnate to everyone, except for her grandfather and 'the tiger's wife'. Lots of imagery, fables, almost magical realism.

A Red Herring Without Mustard by Alan Bradley

3
The third in Bradley Flavia deLuce series, and highly and widely lauded. I love Flavia and really enjoyed getting more of the flavor of her relationship with her father in this book, but I thought the mystery was convoluted and, in places, contrived. I’m running against the current in this opinion, so make your own decision. Besides, Flavia is fun to read even when the mystery isn’t up to par.

Author Dave Norman meets an old high-school friend in Seoul and travels with him across China, Mongolia, and Russia by train. This is the story of that trip – and of Dave and Josh’s dramatically changed relationship.

Alone in the Classroom by Elizabeth Hay

3
The latest by the renowned Canadian author, Alone in the Classroom spans decade - from a Saskatchewan classroom of the 1930s to the present. The narrator uncovers the story of her father’s sister, her Aunt Connie, and of her mother and her family. Although it contained much beautiful writing (as I expect of Hay), overall the book seemed disjointed and unresolved, and disappointed me.

Debbie Rodgers
The Edge of Ruin by Irene Fleming

3
First in the Emily Weiss mystery series. Set in 1909 during the very early days of moving picture making, it’s a clever look at the history of the time when screenplays were dashed off in an evening and given to the actors the morning of the shoot. But the murderer was too obvious and Emily just too perfectly competent. Although the setting is interesting, I doubt I’ll be spending any more time on this series.

One Night at the Call Center by Chetan Bhagat

1
Set in a Delhi call center in modern India, and a best-seller in that country where it was originally released. One of those unfortunate times when I kept reading because I know someone recommended it to me and so it must get better, but when I finished it, thought “Why did I waste x hours of my life on that?”

Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand

This is a riveting account of World War II airmens' survival as prisoners of the Japenese. If you liked Seabiscuit, you'll like this book. When Hillenbrand writes a book it is difficult to put it down and do anything else.

The Runaway by Charlotte Vale Allen

3
New author I've discovered. Read several of her most recent books and really liked them. However, this was one of her earlier books and it had quite a bit of crude language in it. I would have given it higher marks had the language not been an issue. The story line was quite good.

Where You Left Me by Jennifer Gardner Trulson

5
I received this book through First Reads!! I have been through an emotional journey with the author! This is a must read for anyone who has faced tragedy and had a second chance at love. As you follow Jennifer through the ups and downs of recovering from the loss of her husband, there will be lots of tears of sadness as well as tears of happiness. I am so glad that Derek came into Jennifer's life and showed her how to love again.

Debbie M
The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton

3
This is a really long book, and very slow, in the beginning. The plot has many twists and turns concerning Nell's secret. Of course, any biologist could decipher Nell's secret. The story spans 4 generations of women, but one generation only briefly makes an appearance. The garden imagery and the character development are interesting. Once the story started "taking off," I was eager to see the ending. The usage of fairy tales to parallel the story is interesting and has been used by other authors like Carol Goodman. Goodman's writing contains better imagery and characterization.

Maria Bongiovanni
Room by Emma Donoghue

5
I could not put this book down. It had me captured and had to know what was going to happen next. This is a book about Jack, a 5 year old boy who was born in a "Room" and the only world he knew. His mother was kidnapped and forced to live in this Room and she raised him the best she could. I can't tell you the rest because you need to read it for yourself. This book is great for any book club and I'm sure every reader will be ready to tell their experience of reading this book. Excellent!!!

I am a quarter through this book- but love it so far!! It seems head on with todays teenagers and already has made a difference . I understand where my son & daughter are coming from so I am not taking thier comments as personally as I was a week ago. Looking forward to reading more of this book!

Still Alice by Lisa Genova

5
This book is amazing! As a geriatric professional I have read a lot on dementia, but never have I read anything from the patients point view. I found this perspective fresh. Ahlzheimer's being a hard to discuss topic that we as a nation need to prepare for, Lisa Genova does a great job bringing it forward. Still Alice is a fast easy to read book. Not only does it talk about the negative changes, but the positive as well. The book also offers resources available to the public. This book is so timely and such a wothwhile read--I absolutely loved it!

Rachelle Strachar
Devil in the White City by Erik Larson

3
This book is a well written account of the world's fair in Chicago in the 1800's. I loved the descriptions of the architects coming together and planning for the fair. Best of all I lived the accounts of Mr. Ferris's creation of the first Ferris wheel!! What I found hard to take was the accounts- though never gory- of murder. I found them difficult to stomach, creepy and eerie. But I never read murder mystery type of books either. The author approaches them in a straight matter of fact account. For me a more human approach would have helped me deal with them-- but serial killers are far from human.

5
I have never entered this contest before, as I don't typically like to recommend novels. But, I recently read a novel that quite simply changed my outlook (for the better) on life. Cross Currents was the novel and it is simply a beautiful, inspiring story. I'm so grateful that a friend recommended this novel to me. And so I want to pass that favor on...

Cold Vengeance by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child

5
I love these guys. They've added another one of their Pendergast novels to the sleu they've already written. The plots all fit together like a neat puzzle; the reader wonders how the story will all come together, but it does most beautifully. Pendergast is searching in this novel for proof that his wife Helen might still be alive. The reader won't be able to put the book down. This is the 14th in the series. You must read them all!!!!

4
This is a novel based on a factual historical era. It was fascinating to learn personal experiences of the Indians during the 17th century on Martha's Vineyard. The attitudes towards women as well as the Indians was meaningful and believable. The book is definitely a good book club discussion.

5
Wonderful historical fiction! In the style of a "Victorian novel"...addressing the reader directly. Sugar, a nineteen-year-old whore in a brothel, yearns for escape to a better life. Her ascent through the strata of Victorian society is a delicious/captivating story. Wonderful, colorful characters, really an EXCELLENT book.

Brandon's Secret by Lizzy Stevens

5
Brandon's Secret by Lizzy Stevens Strong and to the point in a nice way, with the ocean as a back drop. this book given to 5 others each would come up with a different meaning and how it effects them. ending took me by surprise and really appreciate how the reader is informed that things don't always appear as what you thought. love the explanation. i rate this book a 4.5 as i'd want more background and more for the future of the same characters. note: also now that I know the author has done other stories I want to read all of them.

A Surprise for Christmas by Lizzy Stevens

5
a surprise for christmas by lizzy stevens and what a surprise it is. wow what every single waman dreams of finding, a baby on the doorstep to raise as your own. kinda reminded me of the baby in a basket among the grassy reeds-a religious story. this story a year later has upheaval as the father comes to find his daughter-not knowing the mother was pregnant. magic happens and they fall in love to make it a memorable Christmas for them all. I rate this a 5, it's just the right length and not too heavy, just a light story.

Kiss Me Crazy by E. B. Walters

5
Kiss Me Crazy by E. B. Walters in this book of the family we again are in the art world but a different aspect of it. really cool when they paint murals on the walls. This one has a big twist when a 10 year old murder is brought up and attempted to be solved with new information that does come out in spurts. The love and family scenes are also welcome reading. The escape for me is when they travel to one's hometown and are given a back door guided tour. makes it seem like i'm there with them. and the long trek to the mountain house to do some work and have some play time was also a most welcome trip, to yet another place i've never been in my travels. Love the escape this series brings me and the strong family oriented family and relationships. Can't wait for more.

Dr. Julia Cates was one of the country's best child psychiatrists until a shocking tragedy ruined her career. Retreating to her small western Washington hometown, Julia meets an extraordinary six-year-old girl who has emerged from the nearby woods, a child locked in a world of fear and isolation. Unmeasured Strength by Lauren Manning

5
A tale of courage written by a survivor of the World Trade Center attacks and was burned over 80% of her body. The author tells of how she made a decision to survive, despite the odds. This was an incredibly moving account of one woman's life and her will to live.

The Gamble by Felix Francis

The author is Dick Francis' son who helped him with his later books. This is really good one about gambling and of course horse racing. Glad to know that we will still have the same kind of books Dick wrote. I recommend it.

The Eejit's Tale by Brian G. Scott

5
This book is a great tale that takes in terrorism in Northern Ireland and corruption in the Czech Republic after the Velvet Revolution. It's about a Belfast musician who gets tangled up in paramilitary drug dealing and has to flee the country. He ends up in Prague and gets caught up in dodgy dealings in the Ministry of Privatisation. It's a great read and I thoroughly recommend it. It's only available on Amazon for the Kindle.

Sadie Ogan
A Visit From The Good Squad by Jennifer Egan

4
I really enjoyed this book. It's a fun read relating to the drama of the music industry from all different kinds of perspectives. The book follows a group of people that are directly related, sometime knowingly and sometimes unknowingly. The tense does travel around a bit and at times I found myself trying to figure out where in the story we were, but I loved reading it.

Healing Autumn's Heart by Renee Andrews

5
This story will grasp hold of your heart and emotions. The characters become so real you want to cry, pray, and rejoice with them. A doctor struggling to deal with the grief of losing his wife will have you wanting to help him. His daughter, Autumn, locked in her own world at the loss of her Mother. Then she spies Hannah, sitting in a window display. The pink breast cancer symbol draws Autumn to Hannah. Yet in it all God had a plan unfolding. You get two couples finding healing and love. There is so many emotions. Near the last part be sure to keep a box of kleenex close by s you will need them. The tears will flow as the story will seem so real. A very emotional story and one every woman can relate to I am sure.

Betty Taylor
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

4
This book is quite intriguing. It has photos of unusual children, like you might see in a freak show at a circus, scattered throughout it. The primary character, Jacob, has just lost his grandfather. His grandfather had told him incredible stories of a home he grew up in so Jacob decides to try to find out more about this home. He ends up traveling like through a "wormhole" to encounter the children from the past and learns about this quite unusual home.

I won a 20th anniversary copy of this book. When I saw it was a biblical story, I wasn't sure I would like it, but it reads like a beautiful work of fiction and I find it such an interesting story. I think it's a great read.

Cross Currents by John Shors

An island in Thailand called Ko Phi Phi is an international tourist attraction. In this story we meet a family who lives on this island and runs a resort called Rainbow Resort. We also meet Patch, the resort handyman. He is on the run because he committed a crime in Bangkok. The main event in this story, though, is the tsunami that struck Thailand in 2004. We all were aware of the huge loss of life in that terrible event. The family dynamics and build-up to the tragedy is the main plot of this book. Beautiful descriptions and great story.

One Day by David Nicholls

5
I think this is a book you either love or hate the way it is written and I happened to love it. I read it after seeing that the movie was coming out and I was excited to see it and it didn't come to our city! So, I still haven't seen the movie. The book takes place on the same date every year, it updates you on what's happened in the lives of the two main characters who over a period of years maintain a best friend type relationship, after they spent one night together and they didn't follow up on a romantic relationship, although they both have feelings for each other and want more at one time or the other. I had tears in my eyes through a lot of the book, with the ups and downs of love and life. I'll have to let you read it to see what else happens !

5
Wow! Tight writing, great story line, an emotional roller coaster, and an ending I did not see coming. I was completely transfixed by this stunning debut. Realtor Annie O'Sullivan is abducted one Sunday afternoon by a man who shows up just as she's closing up an open houswe. It's no secret she survives, because the story is told by Annie in her sesions with her psychiatrist. But HOW she survived makes for a riveting story.

3
First time for me for this author.. Not really my kind of book. The story was interesting but I really didn't care for all the descriptive love making, It reminded me of a silly soap opera. I would try another book by this author as I know she is a well liked author.

Don Forsythe
The Nine Lives of Charlotte Taylor by Sally Armstrong

5
This is one of the best works of historical fiction that I have read in years. Armstrong tells the story of one of her ancestors, Charlotte Taylor who left England in disgrace and ends up in what is present day New Brunswick, Canada. It is the 1770's and this indomitable woman begins her life as one of the earliest women settlers in this area of the Northeast. Gray enthralls the reader with the history of the Acadians, the First Nations People, and the English. I could hardly put this book down. For fans of historical fiction it is a must read.

Cindy Hennes
The Paris Wife by Paula McLain

5
I really enjoyed this book. It is written as if Hadley Richardson were telling the story of her life. It left me with a greater acceptance of Ernest Hemingway - sort of put him in a different light for me. The book also opens up Paris in 1920's - very entertaining.

New York to Dallas by J.D. Robb

5
As always, a page turner from beginning to end. The return of an old nemesis has Eve returning to Dallas, where she grew up as a child. She revisits many of her old nightmares and keeps the reader guessing. This is my favorite series. I pick it up as soon as it arrives and drop whatever else I'm reading. The character development is superb. Keep 'em coming!

Debbie M
The Blood Royal by Barbara Cleverly

2
I have enjoyed the Joe Sandilands series in the past, but this novel seems so childish. The characters and writing are immature, like reading a book for teens. I like the emergence of a new character, Lily Wentworth. Joe seems to be a tamer and older version of the Joe living in India. This story involves the Russian aristocracy, and the stories surrounding the death of Tsar Nicholas and his family. Again, the story is not well written.

One Day by David Nicholls

3
I was expecting more out of this book. I enjoyed the life of the main female character, Em, but the life of the main male character, Dex, was TOO disfunctional. His life was too repetitive and took away from what the story could have been. I actually had no desire to see the movie after reading the book.

Kellie
Lieberman's Day by Stuart M. Kaminsky

4
-#2 of the Abe Lieberman Series-The thing I like about these books is the characters. Abe, a Jew, is partnered with Bill, a Catholic. The setting is Chicago. This book is about a murder that hits close to home. Abe’s nephew is shot and killed and his pregnant wife Carol is seriously wounded. Intermingled with this investigation is some other ones Abe and Bill are involved in. This book definitely kept my attention until the very end. I enjoyed the banter amongst Abe and his family and friends. The story line was good although with the minor story lines intertwined, it was sometimes difficult to follow. The ending is good, although a bit unbelievable and there didn’t seem to be enough clues to figure make it legitimate. With that being said, I still enjoyed the book and will continue through the series.

Phyllis
The Greyfriar by Clay Griffith, Susan Griffith

5
A mixture of steampunk (with flying machines and powerful weapons) and vampires, it is both an imaginative adventure and a heartfelt romance. Now on to Riftwalker, the second book in the trilogy, to see how the war between the humans and the vampires proceeds and to see if Adele and The Greyfriar can save their empires. I found The Greyfriar a really enjoyable fantasy.

Brady
In The Wings by Diana Douglas

4
This memoir is by the ex-wife of Kirk Douglas and the mother of Michael Douglas who is a professional thespian in her own right. This is her story of a life filled with activity with a number of bumps in the road. In the early years of her adulthood she had to skimp financially, however, the bulk of it was quite well off indeed. Her love story is one of joy and fulfillment along with the satisfaction of a family that is close and a son, Michael, who was a great help to her all of her life. If you like to read tidbits about various movie stars (not gossip) you should enjoy this book.

Linda McFarland
The Harvest Of Grace by Cindy Woodsmall

I've been reading this series in order. The main character is Detective Lindsay Boxer. She and 3 of her friends have formed what they call the Women's Murder Club where the other 3 help Lindsay solve her cases. In this one, they are investigating the disappearance of an ex-governer's son who has a serious heart condition, and the burning of some of the most beautiful homes in San Francisco who go up in flames with their owners in them.

Told in the voice of a five-year old boy, this is the story of a young girl who has been kidnapped and hidden in a shack where she is constantly sexually abused and eventually gives birth to this child. Sounds miserable and would have been unbearable to read had it not been written from the perspective of this wonderful child. It has been chosen by many book clubs and will generate a great deal of discussion.

Game of Thrones (Song of Fire and Ice Book 1) by George R.R. Martin

This is a fantastic opening to the series. The reader is introduced to the two principal families, the Starks and the Lannisters and the alliances they share. Behind the glamour however are dark forces looking to take power and claim the throne for themselves.

Clash of Kings (Song of Fire and Ice Book 2) by George R. R. Martin

In this second entry, all out war looms on the horizon. The Lannisters and the Starks find themselves on opposite sides after the King dies and his 13 year old son brands the Stark patriarch a traitor, has him executed and his daughters taken hostage. Age old alliances are tested as both sides seek to gather an army for the inevitable battles ahead. Meanwhile, north of the wall, a new threat looms as an age-old enemy appears to be returning.

Room: A Novel by Emma Donoghue

Interesting book about a woman, kidnapped at a young age, imprisoned in a "shed" in her kidnapper's backyard where she raises her son who is fathered by the kidnapper. She is extremely overprotective of her son throughout the book whick makes the reader wonder if something took place that the author has not shed light on yet - aside from the obvious fact that she was violently abducted, raped and kept hidden from the environment. She takes on the role as mother, teacher, doctor, and body guard of this child. And then something extraordinary happens......which I can't divulge. Great read. It took awhile to get used to the narration of the book from the point of view of a five year old boy.

Preying for Mercy by Patricia Briggs

This is a three-in-one Mercy Thompson book. I really love Ms. Briggs' writing style and her characters are absolutely wonderful - all types of fae and others. I highly recommend for an entertaining, often laugh out loud experience.

The House on Tradd Street by Karen White

4.5 stars on this first in a series by Karen White. I haven't read a book by this author I didn't like. This is a great mystery with loads of family secrets. The character development is great and I highly recommend reading this book.

A Bitter Truth by Charles Todd

I prefer the Ian Rutledge series to the Bess Crawford mysteries. Both series are set in England. Bess Crawford is a nursing sister during WWI, and sometimes her duty leads to aiding the local police in solving a murder. This story starts with Bess finding a bruised and distraught woman on her doorstep. Of course, Bess befriends the lady and agrees to return the lady, Lydia, to her country manor. No sooner than Lydia and Bess return to Vixen Hill, the manor, when a guest is murdered. The case deepens when an orphaned French toddler is believed to be the daughter of Lydia's husband. The story has many adventures that seem very unbelievable at times, plus many of the characters are under developed. I enjoy a good cast of characters, but the team of Charles Todd flounders in this aspect.

This is book (2) in a series featuring FBI Agent Patrick Bowers and I would recommend it. I intend to read the other (4) books in the future. The characters were believable and it held my interest.

The Sign by Raymond Khoury

While in Antarctica reporting on a historic ecological event, reporter Gracie Logan witnesses a peculiar site in the sky: a brillant sphere of light in the shape of a symbol. Halfway around the world, in a isolated Coptic Christian monastary, Father Jerome receives a divine message. What does the sign mean and who is it from? Excellent book, very thought provoking.
