There are two books that I really loved and I know I will give as gifts this Christmas to more than one person: THE ART OF RACING IN THE RAIN and THE LACE READER. The first one is perfect for men as well as women; a story of love and loyalty and the second is a book that will intrigue any woman I know as it examines our choices and what we make of our lives.

IT'S MOSTLY HIS FAULT by Robert Alter --- It's not about man bashing. It is written by a man to men who wants to make their marriages better and finally has a point of that validates women and what they have been trying to say all these years to their husbands, boyfriends, lovers.
I think this book shuold be given to every couple as a wedding gift, to every boy child to read as he gets older. It may help the male/female relationship crises we seem to have.

A FINE AND PRIVATE PLACE by Peter S. Beagle --- reissued this year in affordable trade pb, as firsts go for lots of $$. A gentle, thoughtful appealing book with commentaries on life, death, and taxes. Two people who save each other, two ghosts who fall in love, a raven that knows entirely too much and is jaded by it, and a plot line of love and loss...it makes me think every time I read it to remember to tell people to live now, love now, don't save it up for a rainy day...

The most wonderful, magical, and entertaining book ever written, TIME AND AGAIN, by Jack Finney. I have actually given away many, many, many copies of this book over the years.
