As far as classics go, I've been reading PRIDE AND PREJUDICE for over thirty years. When the tattered (and rubber-banded) copy my sister gave me finally gave up the ghost, I had to go out and pick up a new copy.

As far as contemporary books, I recently listened to THE GUERNSEY LITERARY AND POTATO PEEL PIE SOCIETY while driving up and down 'the hill' to the lake. I loved it so much that as soon as I heard the last sentence on the last CD, I threw CD #1 back into the dash player and listened again. Who said a book is like a good friend? Wish it were me...

I re-read GONE WITH THE WIND. My first reading was as a pre-teen and it is interesting to see how I have changed my viewpoint of relationships and the South as I have aged and, I hope, matured. I still read the same copy which belonged to my mother --- cracker crumbs, tear-stains and all.

THE EGG AND I by Betty MacDonald. Released in 1945, it still resounds with humor and adventure down through the years. Although the writing is a tad bit "old fashioned" for today's taste, it does not fail to entertain and engage the reader in Ms. MacDonald's story of life on a chicken ranch in the coastal mountain range of Washington State. This book formed the basis for the Ma and Pa Kettle movies from the 1950s and was itself made into a feature film. For a good old- fashioned laugh-out-loud book, nothing beats THE EGG AND I.
