This first-time published author starts his career with a book that captures the reader from the beginning. It's a tale of World War II, told from the perspective of a 16 yr. old boy in Malaya, who is befriended by a Japanese visitor to the island. As the boy who grows into a man, he discovers his the truth about his mentor. A book of great friendship, of sadness; a book of the study of human nature and our interaction with each other. Phyllis Gould WORLD WITHOUT END --- I was determined to read this book during the summer as I am a teacher and do not have the ability to stick with a thousand-page book and keep up with my job. I am glad I read it as it was almost as fascinating as PILLARS OF THE EARTH. The depth of character study is not present, but the societal study was enlightening. Maureen Hoffman-Wehmeier The Last Lecture Naomi Hard to pick just one, but I'd have to say Robert Crais's CHASING DARKNESS just tops Michael Koryta's ENVY THE NIGHT. Jeri MOSCOW RULES by Daniel Silva. All Silva's book are great, but this one was the best. I couldn't put it down. For me it was Siddons's best yet! Carol THE STORY OF EDGAR SAWTELLE --- I read this in three days, and that includes two work days and during the Olympics. Absolutely fantastic! Shana Breaking Dawn Adam Okhai THE NINE by Jeffrey Toobin. It's fascinating how the government is manipulated at the highest levels. It's equally interesting to learn that so many do the honorable things, and not pander to White House. Unputdownable. Judith Brown Julia's Chocolates Anne Knaack AMERICA AMERICA by Ethan Canin Lori Schultz CONFESSIONS OF A JANE AUSTEN ADDICT by laurie Viera Rigler Geri Dosalua THE FOUNTAINHEAD by Ayn Rand. I had read this over 40 years ago, and now revisited it via audio book. It's every bit as good as when I first read it. And since 40+ years is a long time, it was like reading it for the first time. Kathleen Cutsail The Thirteenth Tale Debbie Unfortunately, there wasn't much out there this summer to get my interest. I hope the fall is much better; frankly, I'm hoping for a big, juicy novel to sink my teeth into. Cynthia Baxter The Story of Edgar Sawtelle Danelle Drake CHANGE OF HEART by Jodi Picoult was THE book of the summer for me and my husband. It was such a moving book; you couldn't put it down when reading it. Kathy Vieira Although I read many wonderful books this summer, I'd have to say my favorite is KEEPING THE HOUSE by Ellen Baker. She is a new author and if this book is any indication, she'll be around for a long time. This book spans 3 generations of women in a midwestern town.
