This is a heart warming true story about a man changing the feeling of Afghanistan and Pakistan about America one school at a time. The story starts with a failure of reaching a peak of a mountain and losing his way back off the mountain. He turns the failure into a mission. This is a man who thinks with his heart.. Dianne Just now finished THE GLASS CASTLE by Jeannette Walls, a very emotional and compelling read!
I am now reading LEARNING AND THEORY, a not-so-emotional or compelling read --- it is a required read! :) Ellen THE MONK UPSTAIRS by Tim Farrington Madeline A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS by Khaled Hosseini (and I'm loving it!) Ron Green TOTAL RECALL by Sara Paretsky Patty Blackwell I just now finished CROSS by James Patterson, and have started STEP ON A CRACK. CROSS was unfullfilling in some ways & yet exceptionally good in others. It didn't pan out the way I thought it would, but then again, James Patterson is always one to have twists and turns, but I did love the characterizations. Boy, James Patterson certainly creates some really BAD bad guys! As far as STEP ON A CRACK goes, I'm very intrigued. The cop with so many kids (and poor wife!). I can tell this is going to be a really good one. Steven Carter WITCH HUNT by Ian Rankin Trez I am reading THE QUEEN'S FOOL by Phillipa Gregory. It is really good. Elisa Martinez THE ANGELS OF MORGAN HILL by Donna VanLiere Alan Sarapa THE GIRLS by Lori Lansens. It is so fantastic. Margaret Olek Esler Three at once currently: WINTER JOURNEY by Isabel Colegate THE POST-BIRTHDAY WORLD by Lionel Shriver THE GOLDEN COMPASS by Philip Pullman Arianna M. Hawkins I am reading a retold fairy tale by Adele Geras called PICTURES OF THE NIGHT. This was a book written over ten years ago and I had to get it from amazon.com because my local bookstores do not carry it anymore! The book is excellent, and is the third in a trilogy called the Egerton Hall Series. It's short but sweet. Julie Peterson THE YIDDISH POLICEMEN'S UNION by Michael Chabon Valerie Pratt VEIL OF ROSES by Laura Fitzgerald Lulu Cannici Five minutes ago, I finished THE POST-BIRTHDAY WORLD Lionel Shriver. She can make paragraphs out of a single thought! I really enjoyed the unusual perspective this book had. However, it was a bit too long -- I believe it could have been cut by 20 percent. I did read WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN, which Ms. Shriver also wrote, and that kept me enthralled the entire time! I could easily read other books in between this one and leisurely return to it, up until the last 75 pages --- then I was glued. Rose - CT I just read A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS by Khaled Hosseini and I highly recommend it. It was heart wrenching, but so well written and quite powerful. You cannot put the book down. I have learned so much about Afghanistan and the region; if you do the research, his books are based on truths. It's a great book for discussion at reading groups. I have no problem waiting two more years for another book from Mr. Hosseini. He has opened his country's soul to us with all its blemishes. Kathy Robinson SUITE FRANCAISE by Irene Nemirovsky. This was a wonderful book, set at the same time as Anne Frank's diary. Phyllis MARCH by Geraldine Brooks Jason Fiske I'm reading SPY by Ted Bell, which I picked up for a trip next week, but then got caught up in the action before the trip. I should have not opened the book until then. Judy Macri Our Book Club is reading WATER FOR ELEPHANTS by Sarah Gruen. So far, it has been very interesting and about a subject many of us were unfamiliar with --- the circus. Irene T Yeates I am reading three: THE CRUEL STARS OF THE NIGHT by Kjell Eriksson; A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS by Hassed Hossini; and DREAM WHEN YOU'RE FEELING BLUE by Elizabeth Berg Sheila Macfarlane BEHIND THE SCENES AT THE MUSEUM by Kate Atkinson Noreen Brown Full of Grace Michele ASTRID & VERONIKA by Linda Olsson Mary I am reading SNOW FLOWER AND THE SECRET FAN by Lisa See. It's fascinating reading about the old customs of the Chinese women. I had a hard time reading about the foot binding. This was a very descriptive and wonderfully written book. This book, like her others, are so good, and it seems that I finish it just as soon as I start it. That's how I know that this is a really good author. A great traveling book. Irish Helen A Thousand Splendid Suns Tamar Joan G. I am reading Emilie Richards's new book, TOUCHING STARS. It is in the Shenandoah Album series. A great read. Bernice Spier WHISTLER AND HIS MOTHER by Sarah Walden. Kay Mehlberg VANISHING ACTS by Jodi Picoult Jane Dwyer TO MY DEAREST FRIENDS by Patricia Volk -- really good. Sunny SUMMER READING by Hilma Wolitzer. I'm so happy she came out of retirement to write again. Nicole McGuire THE EYRE AFFAIR by Jasper Fforde Dodalodle from Beautiful British Columbia ABSOLUTE FEAR by Lisa Jackson Mary Burke THE ALEXANDRIA LINK by Steve Berry stacey Nineteen Minutes Fran Schulman ON BEAUTY by Zadie Smith DE KOONING: AN AMERICAN MASTER by Mark Stevens and Annalyn Swan Gayle The Lincoln Lawyer Kim Stuard VIRGIN RIVER by Robyn Carr. This book is about a woman who leaves LA for the back woods to escape smog, crime, and the memories of her one true love who was murdered in a convenience store robbery. She's grieving, lost and in pain, just wants to get away to somewhere to heal and feel needed in a small town as the midwife and nurse practitioner, helping an aging Doctor. What she finds are the type of people who care, who are each strong characters, who welcome her with open arms and help her heal. This book is such great reading I had to go and get its sequel, SHELTER MOUNTAIN, and now I can't wait to get the third in the series as soon as I can. The characters and the stories within the story are all so well developed they become like family. This is a book that's hard to put down from first page to last. Joyce I am currently reading LUNCHEON OF THE BOATING PARTY by Susan Vreeland. I just finished I HEARD THAT SONG BEFORE by Mary Higgins Clark. J. R. Monahan I am reading THE VIRGIN OF THE SMALL PLAINS by Nancy Pickard and am completely loving it!! Can't wait for her next one!
