October 5, 2001 --- If we as a nation were reading one book, what should it be?

DEMMINGI@aol.com
The only book I think everybody needs to read is the Bible.

ANGELLADY8360@aol.com
My Bible.

KLCCPA@aol.com
The Bible

AWElmore@aol.com
I can't think of a better book than TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD. This is the definitive American novel and its message is so powerful and timeless. The theme of racial strife should be revisited on all generations, especially at a time such as this.

CShank1246@aol.com
ALL'S QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT or ETHICS FOR THE NEW MILLENIUM by the Dalai Lama

Groupcolby@aol.com
Any book on understanding the people that practice ' Islam ' as a religion and not 'Islam' as a political weapon.

DCCJ1@aol.com
No doubt in my mind, It should be ATLAS SHRUGGED by Ayn Rand.  Those who have read it and especially those who have read it more than once will most likely agree.

bluhrig@inct.net
TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD would be an excellent choice for everyone in the US to read at this time.  It has such a calm tone and involves such important concepts - tolerance, justice, taking time to think. Unfortunately, it is being banned in some schools.  Sigh!

ASirkin@aol.com
Every one should read THE FOUNTAINHEAD by Ayn Rand.

JW451@aol.com
The Bible

lin111@juno.com
I think it would be a perfect time for us to become familiar with the Bible.  That's just my humble opinion.

cleas@earthlink.net
The Koran (in translation for most of us)! Not only would it teach us about Islam, a peace-oriented religion, and thus show everyone how similar all the monotheistic religions are at heart (well, all contemporary religions, really: It's all "Do what ye will, as long as ye harm none," as my Wiccanfriends say) and encourage tolerance. It would also be good for everyone toread just about anything that encourages thought, reflection, and love.

MINSMAX2@aol.com
If only one book was being read in the great country, I think it would be The Bible.

BristolBks@aol.com
I think everyone, young and old, should read or re-read Old Turtle by Douglas Wood.

CrE8ARaQeT@aol.com
Mark Twain's HUCKLEBERRY FINN
Maybe we can promote understanding.

bkwmwc@yahoo.com
A PRAYER FOR OWEN MEANY by John Irving

JLShannon@aol.com
THE GREAT GOOD THING, a "children's book" by Robert Townley  is wonderful. It's imaginative and uplifting in these troubled times.

MegVT@aol.com
The Bible

pnichols@woodruffelectric.com

SSIbach@aol.com
The Book of Psalms in the Bible continue to be a comfort and a hope.

If the nation were readng only one book, then I would suggest the Bible.

IoannidesA@aol.com

The Bible would be the one book that we as a nation should read.  Our country was founded on it.

MALCLAN@aol.com
The Bible

JRG0143@aol.com

Teach529@aol.com
I think it should be the Bible. It contains all we need to know to live.

Outlanders19@aol.com

I think the most appropriate book right now would be Harry Kushner's WHENBAD THINGS HAPPEN TO GOOD PEOPLE. It had been standing in my bookcase for awhile, and suddenly, a week ago, I opened it and couldn't put it down. It isa major work of sensitivity, healing and a real mind-opener. I wasoverwhelmed with emotion and a sense of peace. Each and every person who hassuffered from the tragedy should give it a try. Although it will not healthe wounds, it will definitely prove helpful.

If I were suggesting a book for the nation it would be THE SECOND SON by Charles Sailor. It was written and published in the 70's, but it is the kind of book that is timeless, hits "home" at this particular time in our lives as a nation, and renews your faith in mankind, unification, love and honor.

A. Charles Dickens' A CHRISTMAS CAROL
Why: The full and real story in its unaltered, undisturbed state, is a lesson in morality and humanity. It asks us, shows us, to look inside ourselves and begs us to change the way we see fellow men. That it was set in a Christmas atmosphere is a good touch, yet its meaning lies deeper. I'm sure you've been receiving answers to the question with, "War and Peace" and American pride books, but I believe Dickens' classic is a nonviolent story of the struggle inside all of us.

Hyssop7@aol.com
I'd suggest the world's greatest and best selling book ~ the Bible ~ in any version, Protestant or Catholic.
