I'm pretty general in my historical reading. For example, I'm currently reading Roosevelt and Churchill, Men of Secrets by David Stafford and have Queen Victoria by Christorpher Hibbert checked out from the library. A favorite era is, however, that of the U. S. Civil War.

The time period that I would have to say is my favorite to read in fiction or nonfiction would have to be Ancient Greece or Roman times. This time period so fascinates me that when I attended the University of Colorado I took the Alexander the Great and the Hellenistic World class even though it wasn't for my major.

Although I love to read historical books, both fiction and nonfiction, of any period, I do have some favorites. I have a small library devoted to British history, especially books regarding the Middle Ages and the Elizabethian Era. The American Civil War holds a special fascination, as do books on World War II. The biographies I read center around those periods, e.g. Robert the Bruce, Henry II, Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, Eleanor of Aquitaine, Abraham Lincoln, etc. About 70% of the books I read are related to history.

prefer civil war and pre-civil war, i.e., old west of 1849 for u.s. history. spanish history period of the Aztec's and Mayan's especially in the Caribbean all oriental history pre-world war II. very interested in southeast asia/french-indo China. Asian history to include India/Pakistan are interesting find most european history boring tales about 'sir' this and 'king' that or 'queen' something or other being more romantic and boring rather than adventurous european history seems to be a modern day soap opera which is disgusting. hope i covered it well enough to answer ur question.

During that time, our society aligned itself in one of the most heroic struggles ever, and we proved to ourselves and to our posterity, that we could overcome all odds, and defeat those who would oppress and destroy others. It was a time like no other, when our virtues shined as bright as our hopes for a better world.

One area that has been neglected is the second half of the 19th century, but there have been several good books recently, including Ahab's Wife, that describe the era. I think the abolition, underground railroad and women's rights efforts will get more attention in the year ahead. Ken Burns' Not for Our Selves Alone is fantastic. Susan B. Anthony might even get her dollar back!
