When Meena, a young woman living in futuristic Mumbai, finds snakebites on her chest she knows someone is after her and she must flee India. As she plots her exit, she learns of The Trail, an energy-harvesting bridge spanning the Arabian Sea that has become a refuge for itinerant vagabonds and loners on the run. Setting of for Ethiopia on foot, she wonders what the journey will mean for her future. Meanwhile, Mariama, a girl from a different time, is forced to flee her home and finds herself heading for Ethiopia with Yemaya, an enigmatic woman who becomes her protector and confidante. As one heads east and the other west, Meena and Mariama's fates become profoundly and shockingly intertwined.
