Dale M. Kushner

Dale M. Kushner has been honored by a Wisconsin Arts Board Grant, a Pushcart Prize nomination, and residencies at the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation, the Ragdale Foundation, and the Fetzer Institute as a participant in their first writers’ conference on compassion and forgiveness. Her work has been widely published in literary journals including IMAGE, Poetry, Prairie Schooner, Salmagundi, Witness, and Fifth Wednesday. Her most recent poetry collection, MORE ALIVE THAN LIONS ROARING, was a finalist for the May Swenson Poetry Award at Utah State Press, the Prairie Schooner Book Competition, and the Agha Shahid Ali Prize at University of Utah Press. She is on the core faculty of the Assisi Institute and lives with her husband in Madison, Wisconsin. THE CONDITIONS OF LOVE is her first novel.

This story traces love in the life of young Eunice. In the first part, Eunice must reckon with familial love --- from an eccentric mother and an absent father. The second leg of Eunice’s journey introduces her to the steadiness of a nurturing love through her relationship with a mysterious stranger named Rose. Finally, in the third act, Eunice is initiated into the world of passionate love.
