Interview: Rob Leininger, author of Gumshoe Rock

Rob Leininger revived the hardboiled PI genre somewhat modeled after Travis McGee and Sam Spade, but in a humorous vein wide as the Truckee River, which flows through Reno, Nevada, the setting for his Gumshoe novels. GUMSHOE ROCK, the fourth installment in this laugh-riot-with-a-message series, finds Mort again in the clutches of the IRS, an organization he left to take on a career as a novice private investigator. Only now, the FBI is involved. In this interview, Leininger chats with Bookreporter.com’s Dean Murphy about his latest Mortimer Angel adventure, the ladies (Maude Clary, Lucy Landry) in Mort’s world, and a typical day in Leininger’s life.

Their Detective Kubu series, the seventh installment of which releases in January 2020, features the humble and intrepid police investigator taking on criminal and corruption cases. In this interview, Michael and Stanley talk about SHOOT THE BASTARDS, which kicks off a brand new series starring investigative journalist Crystal Nguyen. They discuss their inspiration for this thriller that revolves around rhino poaching and rhino-horn smuggling in Africa, along with some of the research challenges they faced while writing it.

That’s the intriguing tagline of Kaira Rouda’s latest domestic thriller, THE FAVORITE DAUGHTER, which is set in an upscale Southern California community. In this interview, conducted by Bookreporter.com reviewer Rebecca Munro, Rouda introduces us to the book’s main character, Jane Harris, who is determined to refocus on her family after the loss of her oldest daughter the previous year. She explains what attracts her to write about narcissists and why she’s a big fan of unreliable narrators, her decision to “break the fourth wall” in this novel, and how she has used technology (which, she points out, “is completely overtaking our lives”) to her advantage as she’s plotting out her chilling, page-turning stories.
